Red Run News -- January 8, 2012

We welcomed our bishop Ken Martin and his wife Lois to our service this morning. Ken brought a message on resources for encouragement. Our resources are the body of Christ (the church), the words of Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and the Word of God. Each one carries his own load and helps carry the other's overload.

On behalf of the Red Run congregation, Julia Sensenig presented a Bible to Colleen on the occasion of her twelfth birthday.

Randy Hostetter announced that the children's offerings from April to December 2011 amounted to over $500 and is designated towards the swimming pool at Woodcrest Retreat.

Ellen Martin played the prelude music on the keyboard. Bob Sauder, Glenda Lafferty, Randy Hostetter, Letitia Weaver, and Emily Sauder led us in a time of singing to worship our Creator. We prayed for those who are sick.

Some of us had met at the church on Friday evening to bake cookies. As a result, there was a cookie for each person after the church service today.

Next Sunday (January 15, 2012) the Red Run Choir will resume the practice of singing at 8:30 a.m. each Sunday morning.

We look forward to a fellowship meal after the church service on January 15.

Red Run News -- December 18, 2011

About twelve of us caroled on Saturday evening (December 17) in the neighborhood of the church. We delivered the fruit baskets supplied by Marty Weaver. We concluded the caroling with hot dogs, hot chocolate, and cookies outdoors at Joe and Maryann Miozza's home.

In the Children's Time on December 18, Tina Mickley showed the nursing uniform her mother had worn and also shared her own childhood aspiration to be a nurse. Some of the children talked of their future plans. Tina told the story of the three trees who also had plans of their own, but God had even better plans for them. Julia Mickley read the Scripture (Luke 1:26-38) about the good plans God had for Mary. Pastor Kevin used the story of Mary to remind us to commit to obey God, expect to hear God, and expect to bless others. We also learned a lot about angels n the Bible

Next Sunday (December 25) is Christmas Day. A fellowship breakfast will be available from 9:15 to 9:55 a.m. (no Sunday School class), followed by the 10 a.m. church service, in which Ken Sensenig will share a Christmas message for all age groups.

Red Run News -- December 4, 2011

We turn back to God. This was the theme for the second Sunday of Advent.

Colleen and Glenda Lafferty read the Scripture this morning (Mark 1:1-8). The chimes choir presented the hymn, "Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence." We sang "O Come, All Ye Children" during the lighting of the candles.

Excitement ran high during the Children's Time. Emily Sauder pulled into the auditorium a covered wagon carrying an itinerant preacher, a puppet played by her father Bob Sauder. (See the attached photo.) The preacher, along with his dog, faced many challenges in his call to tell others about Jesus. Even when we go through tough times, sharing the good news of Jesus is the most important thing.

Melvin Weaver brought a message about John the Baptist, who announced the coming of Jesus as the fulfillment of God's promises. In our time, we also acknowledge Jesus as the Sovereign Lord and Savior. We confess our sins, live holy lives, tell others about Jesus, love each other, pray for each other, and help each other.

All are welcome to the Christmas program at Red Run to be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday, December 11. And, if you can, bring a plate of cookies to add to the refreshments to be served that evening. Invite others to come to the program.

Ready Runners will meet on Tuesday, December 6, from 6:30 -- 7:30 p.m. for a Christmas program practice.

Red Run News -- November 27, 2011

First Sunday of Advent

Michelle Sensenig played the prelude music. Bob Sauder led us in singing including an Advent favorite "Joy to the World." The chimes choir played "Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silent." Simao Prysakar read the solemn Scripture (Matthew 25:31-46) about the coming again of Jesus. Then Pastor Carl and the puppet Esmerelda had a conversation about that event. The birth of Jesus and the coming again of Jesus are two chapters in the one grand story of God's love for us and for the whole world. Jesus has gone to prepare a home for us and then will return for us. We prepare our hearts for that great occasion.

We prayed for those who are in grief.

On Sunday, November 20, Pastor Kevin had a message from Ephesians 1, calling us to have a strong faith in Jesus and to care for God's people everywhere. Glenda Lafferty led us in singing "Count Your Blessings," "I Have Decided To Follow Jesus," (a favorite of Shannon's), and "When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder," (a favorite of Willis Burkholder's).

Ready Runners will meet at the church on Thursday, December 1, at 6:30 p.m.

On December 4, we will have a fellowship breakfast (9:30-9:55 a.m.) between Sunday School and the church service.

On Sunday evening, December 11, the annual Christmas program will be held at Red Run at 7 p.m.

Leaves, Leaves, Leaves

Red Run News -- November 13, 2011
Saturday was a beautiful fall day to work in the church grove to put the trees to sleep for the winter. We raked leaves, cut low-hanging branches, and rode on trailers.
We mowed leaves, trimmed bushes, and pedaled bikes.
We hauled leaves, played football, and danced to holiday music.
We burned leaves, talked with friends, and ate ham sandwiches.
We pulled leaves out of the rain gutters and even retrieved a bean bag accidentally thrown on the roof weeks ago.
Our energy spilled over into helping some of the neighbors as well.
Thanks to those who organized the work day and all who helped.

For our Sunday service, Ellen Martin played the prelude and offering music, including the hymn "Fairest Lord Jesus." Bob Sauder, Randy Hostetter, Letitia Weaver, and Ian Martin led us in singing. We sang several hymns that are based on the 90th psalm.

Pastor Carl reflected on the 90th psalm. We thought about God's sovereignty, unfailing love, and just wrath. We thought about human sin and frailty. And we were reminded of God's grace to forgive our sins. We were also reminded of our responsibility to appropriate that grace to live in God's will in this brief but important blip called life.

Pastor Carl talked about the upcoming Advent services (beginning November 27) on the theme "We Receive the Best Gift." See Pastor Carl if you would like to read the Scripture or share a ten-minute story time with the children on one of these Sundays.

Melvin Weaver reported from Eastern Mennonite Missions on the challenges of mission work in Europe. Julia Sensenig reported on the fall women's assembly of our conference that was attended by four women from our congregation.

There is a card making session at the church on Saturday, November 19, from 9-11 a.m.

Remember that next Sunday (November 20), we look forward to a fellowship meal. On December 1 (Thursday) Ready Runners will meet at the church at 6:30 p.m. On Sunday, December 4, there is a fellowship breakfast between Sunday School and the church service.

Our annual Christmas program is on the evening of December 11 at 7 p.m..

We bring the sacrifice of praise

Red Run News -- October 30, 2011

A lovely October snowfall complicated our lives this morning. Some of us did not have electricity at home. Some of us faced detours enroute to the service because of the trees and electric lines that were down. Some congregations were not able to have services today, but we were thankful to be able to meet together at Red Run. We prayed for those who are experiencing hardships as the result of this storm.

The Sunday School lesson was on the Beatitudes in the Sermon on the Mount.

Pastor Carl brought a message from Psalm 43 about coming into the house of God with our offerings of money, praises, and our very lives. "We bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the Lord." We sang "I was glad, I was glad when they said unto me" and then the children helped us to sing a new song: "I Like to Pray."

On the keyboard, Ellen Martin played "We are climbing Jacob's ladder." We sang some more favorite songs today: "He Hideth My Soul," a favorite of Earl Martin, and "As the Deer," a favorite of Miguel Prysakar. We are thankful for a good medical report from Rhoda Nolt. We prayed for Lonnie and Amy and daughter Emma as they have begun a new home. We prayed for Glenn and Julie Stauffer and family in Montana as Mel and Ruthie reported on their recent visit there.

In the combined adult class, Bishop Ken Martin will speak for a few minutes about the bishop discernment for the Weaverland-Northeast District. Then a speaker from the Gideons will share until the 9:30 a.m. fellowship breakfast. During that break time, you may want to talk to either Ken Martin or or the Gideons speaker or both. Ken Sensenig will have the message during our regular 10 a.m. service.

Red Run News -- October 2, 2011

We gathered on this cloudy, fall day to celebrate the communion service -- in remembrance of what Jesus has done for us on the cross. Those who came early heard the choir sing "Saved by the blood of the crucified one" and other hymns of faith. Some in that early audience were quietly singing the words as their own testimony.

Assisted by Letitia, Pastor Kevin re-enacted a betrothal which was sealed by each drinking from the same cup. Then the bridegroom went away to prepare a house and the bride prepared herself in expectation for the groom's return. Even so, the church waits expectantly for the return of Jesus Christ. And the communion service is the reminder of who Jesus is, what he has done for us, and that he is coming for us to take us to the place that he has prepared for us. So today we broke bread together and drank from the cup as a reminder of these truths.

Bob Sauder, Letitia Weaver, Randy Hostetter, and Emily Sauder led us in singing today. We sang "Let your face shine upon us that we may be saved," which comes from the 80th psalm, one of the texts used by Pastor Kevin. We also sang "Crown Him with Many Crowns," which is a favorite hymn of Maxine Harting.

We prayed for those in the northern part of our state, who are still reeling from the devastation of recent flooding. Continue to remember those among us who are ill. Give thanks for the healing that God has provided.

On Sunday, October 9, we plan for a fellowship breakfast between Sunday School and the church service. Then on Sunday, October 16, we plan to have a fellowship meal after the church service.

On September 25, Pastor Carl brought a message on spiritual gifts. This is the time of the year when we fill certain offices in the life of the church. We sang "When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder," a favorite hymn of Willis Burkholder. Paul and Edith Gehman expressed thanks to the congregation for support and prayers during the recent passing of their grandson Kole Trupe.

Red Run News -- September 11, 2011

In the basement, the children sang an invitation, "Come, Come, Everybody Worship." They accompanied their singing with various percussion instruments.
We gathered in worship with subdued spirits. We acknowledged the death of Kole Trupe, son of Jeff and Denise Trupe, grandson of Paul and Edith Gehman. Paul shared some of the experiences of this past week with the congregation.

We also acknowledged the hardship caused by the flooding in our region. Today also represents the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attack on our nation.

In light of the above, we reflected together on Psalm 42, a psalm of lament. Pastor Kevin brought a message on Romans 14, calling us to servanthood (doing what God wants) rather than independence (doing what I want). He brought a lot of different types of drink, none of which are wrong for us to drink, but some of which may be unwise for us to drink regularly or in large quantity. To encourage each other and to reach out to others, we must do what is right according to our hearts but we must also lay aside a spirit of judgment.

In the month of September, we have the challenge each week to select someone for whom to pray -- also to call someone to offer a word of encouragement.

Note that a fellowship meal will follow the Sunday morning service on September 18.

We pray for safety in hurricane aftermath

Red Run News -- August 28, 2011

Many in this area faced uncertainties as hurricane Irene impacted us on her way up the eastern coast of the United States this weekend. Many homes and church buildings were without electricity. Some roads were closed by flooding. We prayed for those impacted by the storm and for the emergency personnel who are assisting people.

Fortunately, we were able to hold services at Red Run although some of us needed to take a detour to get here. Tim Martin taught the combined adult class from Chapter 2 of Jesus Matters. We considered some of the names of Jesus: Jesus, Savior, Son of God, Messiah, and Lord.

The lesson on the international Sunday School lesson was postponed for one week. Next week (September 4) Paul Gehman will teach from Ruth 4:1-10, which was the lesson scheduled for today. Bob Sauder will teach the elective class from Chapter 3 of Jesus Matters.

Also on September 4, we plan to hold a fellowship breakfast (9:30 to 9:55 a.m.) between the Sunday School class and the church service. Pastor Carl is scheduled to bring the message in the 10 a.m. service.

Melvin Weaver told the story of Mordecai and Haman to the children. Melvin brought the message from Matthew 16, "Who do you say that I am?" As Lord, Jesus calls us to a life of discipleship and self-denial. Julia Sensenig led us in singing including the hymn "I Know Whom I Have Believed," a favorite of Tina Mickley.

We acknowledged the passing of David W. Mohler who died in a lawn-mowing accident on Friday. David had served as deacon at Gehman Mennonite Church from 1978 to 2003. He had also served on the board of Freedom Gate, a ministry to assist those making the transition after release from prison.

New Life in Jesus

Red Run News -- August 21, 2011

We acknowledged the passing of Esther M. Good on August 14. Esther was a member at the Bowmansville congregation and the sister of Marty Weaver.

Today we enjoyed the great outdoors by holding our Sunday service in the Cedar Pavilion at Woodcrest Retreat Center. Bob Sauder led us in singing from the Life Songs. Pastor Carl brought a message on the new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17). He and Julia did a skit to illustrate the transformation effected by Jesus in the life of a woman. Those who are born anew into God's kingdom live in a world where God is bringing reconciliation and restoration.

We prayed for the many among us who are returning to the classroom in the next week or two. Some of us are at transition points in our education and face new challenges and opportunities.

After the service, we enjoyed a fellowship meal, featuring the chicken BBQ prepared by Willis and Anna Mary Burkholder.

There was some delightful on-and-off rain. But it did not interfere with the fun time on the water slide during the afternoon hours.

On Sunday, August 14, Ken Sensenig, held us all spellbound with the story of how he rescued a little raccoon from a trap. The raccoon did not know that Ken was there to help until it walked away free. Ken brought a message on the woman who desired to eat the crumbs that fell from the table (Matthew 15). Jesus showed the disciples what their narrow attitudes really looked like and then declared a blessing on the great faith of this Gentile woman. We sang "Children of the Heavenly Father," a favorite song of Melvin Weaver.

Jesus walks on the water

Red Run News -- August 7, 2011

Those who came early could hear the choir singing hymns of praise to Jesus from the Church and Sunday School Hymnal: "Jesus Saves," "Saved by Grace," "Weeping One."
Pastor Carl brought a message about Jesus walking on the water (Matthew 14:24-36). Jesus is present with us in the storms of life. We take courage because Jesus is near.

The early elementary Sunday School class is excited about memorization of the Bible. Some students say the verses aloud; others write the verses from memory. They earn prizes for their efforts.

We look forward to our annual church retreat at Woodcrest on Sunday, August 21, 2011. The church service is at 11 a.m. at Woodcrest, followed by a chicken BBQ/fellowship meal.

On July 31, Pastor Kevin brought a message on the feeding of the five thousand, also found in Matthew 14. He brought homemade bread which the children distributed to the the congregation. The message encouraged us to believe in Jesus, the Bread of Life, and also to care for those in need. Randy Hostetter led us in hymns about belonging to Jesus -- "Savior, Teach Me Day by Day," and "Take My Heart, O Father." We also sang "Come Gracious Spirit," a favorite hymn of Paul Gehman.

Unity, purpose, and passion

Red Run News -- July 24, 2011

Kevin and Letitia Weaver reported from the Global Fair held on Saturday. Their report included the encouraging news that God is blessing the Mennonite Church in Vietnam with growth and spiritual vitality.

Brian Guzman, pastor of the Prince of Peace congregation in Reading, was our guest speaker today. He used the account of the healing of the paralyzed man (in Mark 2). He especially focused on those who helped the paralyzed man through the roof and into the presence of Jesus. This is a challenge to us to work together in unity with purpose and passion.

We sang a hymn which is a favorite of Joyce Sauder -- "I Am Thine, O Lord."

Red Run News – Sunday, July 17, 2011

In our service today, the children sang “Rock of Ages,” a song they had learned in our Summer Bible School a few weeks ago. The choir sang, “My Life Flows On.” We sang one of Emma Good’s favorite hymns “Jesus Paid it All” and Edith Gehman’s favorite hymn “We Praise Thee, O God.” We also enthusiastically sang the hymn “Follow On.”

During the children’s time, Pastor Kevin Weaver displayed some weeds and talked about the effects of weeds in a garden. His message was on the parable of the weeds and the good seeds from Matthew 13:24-30. Kevin showed us two cartoon clips: the parable of the soil and also of the good shepherd. God is good, and the whole world belongs to God. However, we can expect struggle and trouble here in this world. That’s why we need to encourage one another. But the end is coming. Let us be faithful to God, doing what pleases Him – no matter what.

A memorial service for Pastor Kenneth Horning was held this afternoon at Oley Mennonite Church. Ken was the pastor at Red Run in 2001-02. We remember him as a man committed to Christ and the church.

As always, we brought to God the needs among us along with thanks to God for His goodness.

We look forward to August 21, which is our Sunday at Woodcrest. The church service will be held at 11 a.m. at Woodcrest, followed by a fellowship meal which will include the chicken BBQ prepared by Willis and Anna Mary Burkholder.

Sowing and receiving the presence of Jesus

Red Run News -- July 10, 2011

On Saturday evening, we enjoyed a chicken BBQ and game night in the grove. Thanks to Willis and Anna Mary for preparing the chicken and organizing the food.

We acknowledged the passing of Kenneth Horning on July 7. He served as interim pastor at Red Run 2001-02. The memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 17, at 2 p.m. at Oley Mennonite Church. Pray for his wife Selena.

Ellen Martin played the prelude music -- including "These Are the Days of Elijah." Glenda Lafferty led us in singing. We sang "O How I l Love Jesus," which is a favorite hymn of Carl Good. Tim Martin led us in the time of announcements and prayer. We prayed for those among us who are facing medical tests or surgery. We prayed for the new nation of South Sudan. We remembered those among us who are traveling.

Ken Sensenig had the message this morning on the parable of the sower. He showed us the grass seeder that he used to sow seed at his home 12 years ago. In the heat of summer, he can still see that the grass turns brown over a former truck driveway and remains lush over where a pile of topsoil once stood. By looking at his own heart, Ken challenged us to consider the times and seasons of our own lives as to how receptive we are to the presence of Jesus.

Ready Runners will meet Wednesday, July13, at 6:30 p.m. at the church.

An outdoor inspirational service will be held at the historical Alleghany Mennonite Meetinghouse on Sunday, July 17, at 6:30 p.m. with Ken Sensenig as the speaker. The 1855 sandstone structure and interior show us how people gathered for worship in previous generations.

On August 7, we plan for a fellowship breakfast (9:30 a.m.) between Sunday School and the church service. Sign up on the bulletin board if you want to help bring the food and the drink.

The Ready Runners are planning for a picnic on Monday evening, August 8. More details later.

A brochure was put in the church mailboxes with a description of how the congregations of Lancaster Mennonite Conference provide resources for one another. This is an opportunity for us to join together in God's mission.

A Cup of Cold Water

Red Run News -- July 3, 2011

We gave thanks to God for our nation and that we could gather together to worship on this beautiful summer day. Pastor Melvin led the service at the campground this morning. We enjoyed a fellowship breakfast between Sunday School and the church service.

Esther Martin led us in a call to worship from Psalm 9. Pastor Carl brought a message on "A Cup of Cold Water." We both offer and receive these signs of caring for one another. Carl also told the children of how he was blessed with a cup of cold water when as a child he and his brother Leonard made a trek to secure something that was important to them. (They walked seven miles and home again to get a beautiful Luna moth that Alice Witmer had caught at her home in Martindale.)

Bob Sauder led us in songs we selected from the Life Songs: "For Christ and the Church," "Jesus, the Very Thought of Thee," "Transformed," and "I Love to Steal Awhile Away." We also sang a favorite song of Emilie Sauder ("J-O-Y") and of Julia Sensenig ("Sometimes a Light Surprises," which she sang in the Singing Servants chorus many years ago.) Last Sunday we sang a favorite of Ellen Martin "There Is a Redeemer."

Pastor Kevin reported that he and his family are harvesting wheat the old-fashioned way -- in sheaves. This reminds us of the words of Jesus to pray for workers since the fields of grain are ripe for harvest.

Eugene Hurst is out of his sling and now faces about eight weeks of therapy. We prayed for those among us and in our families who face challenging circumstances.

We look forward to the chicken BBQ/Game Night to be held in the grove this Saturday, July 9, beginning at 4 p.m., meal at 5 p.m. Bring one hot or cold dish, lawn chairs, and games. Drink and paper supplies will be provided. Thanks to Willis and Anna Mary Burkholder for planning this. All are welcome.

Being generous

Red Run News -- June 26, 2011

Pastor Melvin told the story of King Ahaziah and the prophet Elijah. Melvin and Kevin also did a yard sale skit to illustrate the difference between being generous or miserly. Melvin's message this morning was from Romans 6 "Presenting yourselves to God."

We gave thanks foe God's protection on Willis Burkholder when a tree branch fell on him while he was mowing the lawn in the church grove.We prayed for those who are traveling and for those who are sick.

Marvin Martin reported that the Clouse family (his niece Janelle) has welcomed the birth of Gabriel Nelson. This is the family that had suffered the loss of their children in a devastating fire.

Next Sunday (July 3), there will be a fellowship breakfast at 9:30 a.m. between Sunday School and the church service.

How shall we live?

Happy Father's Day to all you dads. What a joy to gather at Red Run in the peaceful beauty of a well-maintained grove!

Thank you to all who attended and helped with our Summer Bible School at the Bowmansville Mennonite Church. All ages received good teaching from the Bible. In our sharing time this morning, some of the children (and others too) shared some reflections from Bible School.

We were glad that Irvin and Louise Martin were with us at this morning's service. Irvin served as the bishop of our church district from 2000 to 2008. This morning he challenged us with a message: "How then shall I live?" (based on Ezekiel 33:10 and 2 Peter 3:11). Irvin drew some conclusions in answering this question for us today: remember God's forgiveness, extend God's forgiveness, life is a struggle, live with joy, live free, control thought life, be a child of the King, be a servant, share the good news, remember that our citizenship is in heaven.

Bob Sauder led us in singing including the hymn "It is Well With My Soul," a favorite hymn of Charles Harting. We remembered Matthew in his search for a new job. We prayed for the sick.

We note the passing of Mel Martin after a lengthy illness. Mel was a good friend and hunting partner of Willis.

The Gift of the Holy Spirit

Red Run News -- June 12, 2011 (Pentecost)

Bob Sauder, Glenda Lafferty, Colleen Lafferty, Randy Hostetter, and Letitia Weaver led us in singing this morning. We sang some songs about the Holy Spirit since today is Pentecost, the Christian holiday celebrating the gift of the Holy Spirit to the Christian church. We also sang "Beulah Land," which is a favorite hymn of Marty Weaver.

We prayed for those who are moving this coming week. Amy is moving to her parents' home in preparation for her wedding this fall. Luke and Ruth Horst are moving from a cottage to an apartment at Landis Homes. We gave thanks that no one was injured when a tree fell on a vacated dugout after a game had been cut short by a thunderstorm. Ian's team had been playing there that evening. We continued to remember in prayer those who are sick.

Bishop Ken Martin gave the message this morning from Acts 1 and 2. Before the risen Christ ascended to heaven, he told the disciples to await the gift of the Holy Spirit, who would empower them to be witnesses for Jesus. From this passage Ken encouraged us to wait on the Lord, to be witnesses for Jesus, to live in unity as God's people, to allow the Holy Spirit to work in our lives, and to continue the work of Jesus. The choir closed our service with the hymn "Spirit of God, Descend upon My Heart."

All are welcome to Summer Bible School at the Bowmansville Mennonite Church each evening at 7 p.m. through Thursday (June 12 -16). There are classes for all ages, including an adult class. On Sunday evening, Tom Horst taught the adult class with a focus on communication.

Red Run News -- June 5, 2011

Thanks to those who planned, provided for, and participated in the leadership appreciation picnic at the Terre Hill Park on Saturday evening. The food was great. The little airplanes had flights of varying quality. The Apple-to-Apple and Scrabble games were fairly intense. The balloons were twisted into interesting shapes. The fellowship was encouraging.

Pastor Kevin had the message this morning. The title was "The Cloud Rider" from Psalm 68:4. He showed us photos of different types of clouds using PowerPoint. The verses from Psalm 68:1-10 were superimposed on the cloud and scenery pictures. Our "cloud-riding" God deserves our deep respect and calls forth songs of praise from our hearts. As a response to the love of this awesome God, we share with those in need, father the fatherless, defend the widows, and bring the lonely into our circles.

Randy Hostetter led us in singing one of Marvin Nolt's favorite hymns, "Just As I Am."
We also sang "Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing," "We Praise Thee, O God!", "Hark! Ten Thousand Harps and Voices," and "The Solid Rock."

During the fellowship breakfast, the congregation blessed Carl and Julia with a card and planter in honor of their 35th wedding anniversary.

On May 29, Pastor Carl brought a message on the Holy Spirit from the Gospel of John. The Holy Spirit can be described as the Spirit of Jesus, the Spirit of Truth, Comforter, Counselor, Advocate, Helper, Friend, the One who stands by our side. We sang Bob Sauder's favorite hymns: "Come, Gracious Spirit" and "By Cool Siloam's Shady Rill."

On May 22, Pastor Melvin brought a message on "Come to Him, a Living Stone." We come to Jesus, our constant companion, for refreshment and renewal. We sang Simao Prysakar's favorite hymn, "Amazing Grace." At the fellowship meal, we acknowledged the emergency medical personnel who responded when Joe Miozza had a recent medical emergency. Several of these persons were present for the meal.

Red Run News -- May 15, 2011

Our Sunday School lesson was from Revelation 7, the account of that great multitude of every tribe and tongue praising God. Bob Sauder led in two hymns based on that passage: "Are You Washed in the Blood?" and "Hallelujah! Sing to Jesus."

Pastor Kevin demonstrated to the children some of the figures of speech in the twenty-third psalm: preparing a table, anointing with oil, and a cup that runs over. His message compared Psalm 22 (a psalm of suffering) to Psalm 23 (a psalm of God's presence and goodness in our lives.) We are assured that God is with us. We come close to God as we experience time with Him, become good at listening to Him, and hold onto the belief that God is good. The choir followed the message by singing "The Lord Is My Shepherd."

Bob Sauder, Letitia Weaver, Randy Hostetter, and Glenda Lafferty led us in singing. Today we included one of Miguel's favorites, "These Are the Days of Elijah."

What a joy to see even the youngest children join the others in bringing their offerings to the Lord.

On May 8, the men celebrated Mother's Day by preparing breakfast for everybody. Pastor Carl led the children in thinking about that our parents do for us, that which can be measured in dollars and that which cannot be so measured. The message was about the miracle of being born anew into God's Kingdom.

Red Run News -- May 1, 2011

As the children arrived this morning, they were intrigued by a winding road that had been outlined in the fellowship hall. The older children could travel this road from beginning to end in about ten seconds. They dutifully repaired (with scotch tape and yarn) those sections of the road damaged by their haste. It turned out that this road was for the class of the youngest children. The road was the road to Emmaus as traveled by the disciples when they met the risen Christ.

Ellen Martin played music for us on the keyboard, including "Spirit of the Living God." The choir sang "Springs of Living Water." Randy Hostetter, Glenda Lafferty, Colleen Lafferty, and Bob Sauder led us in a time of singing, including "Our Life Is in You, Lord."

In the message, Ken Sensenig compared Luke 9 (a Samaritan village refused to receive Jesus and his disciples) to Luke 10 (a Samaritan is a hero of radical hospitality). We are also called to reach across the cultural divides. In the children's time, Ken recounted how a stranger from another culture helped him when he was in an airport.

Kevin Weaver was dressed as a chef including a hat to remind us that the men are preparing a breakfast for us all this coming Sunday, May 8, which is Christian Family Sunday (Mother's Day). Breakfast will be served from 8:30 a.m. to 9:20 a.m. Then there will be a Sunday School classes (9:25 to 9:55 a.m.), followed by the church service at 10 a.m.

Kevin also displayed a long chart of the history of the world, a souvenir from his trip to the Creation Museum with his school students.

We acknowledged the passing of Irvin B. Horst (uncle of Esther Martin), Mennonite historian, scholar, teacher, and author.

Other prayer items:
Eugene H. is scheduled for shoulder surgery on May 18. Kerry has an outing scheduled with his students on Saturday. Randy and Tim were blessed with safety as they put a new roof on a pavilion at the park in Adamstown. We are thankful that Luke Horst has recovered from a recent illness.

Red Run News -- Easter Sunday, April 24, 2011

We celebrated Easter by singing many of the great hymns about the resurrection. Bob Sauder led us in singing. Pastor Melvin walked the children through the events of Passion Week and Easter. A dozen plastic eggs contained symbols which reminded us of these events.

Pastor Melvin brought a message on resurrection past, resurrection present, and resurrection future. We now experience the transforming grace of the living Christ even as we look forward to the final resurrection.

We prayed for those who are sick and those who are away from home.

Ready Runners will meet on Wednesday, April 27, at 6:30 p.m. at the church.

May 8 is Christian Family Sunday (Mother's Day). Breakfast will be served from 8:30 to 9:20 a.m., followed by a half-hour Sunday School, and then the regular 10 a.m. service.

Red Run News -- April 17, 2011

Thanks to all who helped to clean the church building and the grounds on Saturday. The lunch that followed included chicken barbecue from the Gehmans School fundraiser.

In commemoration of Holy Week, we are planning a Tenebrae service on Thursday, April 21, with a light meal at 6 p.m. and a service at 7 p.m.

Ellen Martin played reflective music on the keyboard, including the hymn "What Can Wash Away My Sin?" Pastor Carl talked to the children about the "Words of the Cross." He then brought a message on the text: The curtain was torn in two. By the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross, we can enter into the presence of God. We testified to this by sharing together in the communion emblems.

Bob Sauder, Letitia Weaver, Randy Hostetter, Miguel and Simao Prysakar led us singing about the triumphal entry and also the cross of Calvary.

The children of Red Run collected over $200 for the Mennonite Central Committee Penny Power project. During the upcoming months, the children's offerings will go toward the campaign for a pool at Woodcrest Retreat Center.

God bless Julia Mickley as she goes to Vermont to work for several months.

We prayed for the sick and gave thanks for healing. Congratulations to Marvin and Rhoda on the birth of grandson Cody Layne (son of Wes and Renae).

April 10 was a busy Sunday at Red Run. In the morning service, our guests from Friendship Community led us in worship with singing and creative movement. We enjoyed a fellowship meal together. Then in the evening service, high school students from Ephrata Mennonite School presented a program of drama and music which challenged us to the seriousness of life.

Tim Martin taught the combined adult class and Pastor Kevin taught the children while Letitia Weaver led the chimes choir practice. We enjoyed a fellowship breakfast between Sunday School and the church service.

Pastor Carl read from the Gospels to explain the practice of footwashing. He also challenged us to examine our own hearts in preparation for communion service on April 17. We take this opportunity to draw close to the heart of God. At the close of the service, we participated in footwashing, according to the example given to us by Jesus.

We look forward to next Sunday (April 10) when the folks from Friendship Community will lead our morning service.

On March 27, Pastor Kevin talked about the water of life offered by Jesus. Tina Mickley reported from Stewardship University. Melvin Weaver, Tim Martin and Letitia Weaver reported from the Celebration of Church Life.

As a congregation in the Lancaster Mennonite Conference, we share together a vision of the river of life that flows from the throne of God and brings life, healing and salvation wherever it flows.

Turning my wallet upside down

Red Run News -- March 20, 2011

A little boy took some time to make sure his purse was emptied of all coins during the offering time this morning. The moderator Bob Sauder mused, "Would I be willing to turn my wallet upside down like that and shake it?"

Julia Sensenig talked to the children about going on a trip to tell others about Jesus. She loaded herself down with things she would "need" until she could barely walk. But then she realized that telling others about Jesus need not be complicated. It can be as simple as crossing the street and talking to a neighbor. Pastor Carl brought the message from Mark 6:6-13. This is the account of Jesus sending out the disciples. Jesus instructed the disciples to travel lightly. The congregation reflected together on the question: What is the big-picture story of the Bible?

Bob Sauder, Glenda Lafferty, Randy Hostetter, Letitia Weaver, and Nathaniel Martin led us in singing.

The paper tulips that graced the table during the fellowship meal were created by the students in Joyce Sauder's class.

Our next fellowship meal is scheduled for April 10 when we are hosting the singers from Friendship Community. Lewie and Esther Martin are walking this week for No Longer Alone Ministries.

Prayers for bereaved parents

Red Run News -- March 13, 2011

Pastor Kevin led us in prayer for Ted and Janelle Clouse, who lost seven children in a fire this week in Perry County. Janelle is the niece of Marvin Martin. Marvin, Ellen, and Kerry plan to attend the funeral service on Tuesday. Kerry will serve as a pallbearer.

This morning Bob Sauder took selections for the hymns that we should sing. We sang "Amazing Grace," When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder," and "It Is Well with My Soul."

Pastor Melvin spoke to the children about "What's in a name." He told the story of a baby girl who was named by her older brothers. It was a time of war, and the brothers named the little girl Elfrieda, referring to the God of peace.

In the message, Pastor Melvin spoke from Psalm 32, one of seven penitential psalms. The psalmist cries out to God, confesses sin, and watches for God to restore. Sin will wreck our lives, but through Jesus the chain of sin is broken and we are set free.

Next Sunday (March 20), we look forward to a fellowship meal after the morning service.

On Thursday, March 24, the Ready Runners will meet at the church at 6:30 p.m. On Saturday, March 26, there will be a card-making session at the church at 9:30 a.m

Red Run News -- February 27, 2011

Glenda Lafferty led us in singing "Come Thou Almighty King," "All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name," "When We All Get to Heaven, "Freely, Freely," and "We Worship and Adore."

Today we thought about the words of Jesus - God takes care of the flowers of the field and the birds of the air. How much more, God will take care of us who are his beloved children. The children led us in singing two songs based on today's text. Pastor Kevin talked to the children about how God cares for the flowers. In the message he showed pictures of various birds along with the words of Jesus. We cannot serve both money and God. Everything belongs to God and we desire to use these things in a way that honors God. We were challenged to put our full trust in God.

The small group is meeting this evening at the church to continue the study on prayer.

Ears that hear

Bob Sauder, Randy Hostetter, Letitia Weaver, Glenda Lafferty and Colleen led us in a time of singing: "The Battle Belongs to the Lord," "Step by Step," and "Shine on Us."

We prayed for those who are undergoing medical tests. We prayed for family and friends who are sick.

For the children, Pastor Carl talked about the marvels of the ear. "Ears that hear and eyes that see, the Lord has made them both" (Proverbs 20:12). The message was on the parable of the sower (Mark, chapter 4). He used a clover seeder to demonstrate how a sower can broadcast the seeds. This parable illustrates the different ways in which we can hear the words of Jesus. Some hear the word, but Satan immediately snatches it away. Some hear and receive the word, but in time of hardship, they fall away. For some, the word is choked out by the worries of this life or the deceitfulness of riches. But for some, the word takes root and produces fruit in their lives.

We enjoyed a fellowship meal after the church service today.

A small group met this evening at the church. This group has been studying 7 Prayers That Will Change Your Life Forever by Stormie Omartian.

Choice Books has set up books in the annex area for this Sunday and next Sunday (February 20 and February 27). Suggested donation is 50% of the marked price.

Anna Mary Musser passes away at 92

Our oldest member, Anna Mary Musser, age 92, passed away on Monday, February 7, 2011. The funeral service was held on Friday, February 11, at the Red Run Church with burial at the Bowmansville Mennonite Cemetery. In both the Sunday School classes and also the church service, we took the opportunity to share some memories of Anna Mary. Thanks to all who helped with the funeral service and the meal.

Bob Sauder opened our service today with the hymn "Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee." The chimes choir played "Holy God, We Praise Thy Name." Bob Sauder, Glenda Lafferty, Tisha Weaver, Randy Hostetter, and Emily Sauder led us in a time of singing -- including the song "Jesus, Be the Center." Pastor Melvin told the children the account of how 50,000 Bible commentaries were brought into what was then the Soviet Union. (This is a story in Leap of Faith by Peter Dyck.) In the message, Melvin gave an overview of the teaching of peace in the Bible and in church history.

Remember that next Sunday, February 20, we are planning for a fellowship meal following the service.

Wednesday evening, February 9, was a Ladies Night Out at the church. Mim Reiff from the Bowmansville Mennonite congregation taught us how to make creative gift bags from wallpaper samples, glue, pictures, yarn, and ribbon. We enjoyed the fellowship and refreshments. Thank you, Ruthie Weaver, for planning this fun event.

The Salt of the Earth

Red Run News -- February 6, 2011

After Sunday School, we enjoyed a fellowship breakfast. The chimes choir has made some preparation to present some music next Sunday, February 13. (For those playing the chimes, remember that practice on February 13 is at 8:30 a.m.)

Randy Hostetter led us in singing about the salvation that Jesus brings -- "Freely, Freely," "Jesus Saves!" "I Love To Tell the Story."

Pastor Kevin brought the message on the text "You are the salt of the earth." Some of the children distributed pretzels and peanuts to show that salt is good for flavoring and preserving. We repent of wrong priorities, and then we ask the Lord for boldness in sharing the gospel in a flavorful way. This witness creates a thirst for God within those in our lives.

We prayed for the people of Egypt during this time of turmoil and uncertainty.

On Sunday, January 30, Bob Sauder took song selections from the congregation. Our favorites include "Because He Lives," "I Know Whom I Have Believed," "The Old Rugged Cross," and "There Is a Redeemer." Pastor Carl brought a message from John 17 and Ephesians 4 on the responsibility of every Christian believer to protect the unity of the church. The children sang the Ten Commandments.

We said good-bye to Thomas who was with us a number of weeks. He was learning woodworking from Warren Mickley. Thomas has now returned to his studies at Oberlin College.

We rejoice that Mel Weaver was able to help the Witmers by arranging for the installation of a gas heater.

We congratulated Tina Mickley upon her graduation with a master's degree in social work from Temple University.

We plan for a fellowship meal on February 20. As we look forward to Lent and Easter, please put the following dates on your calendar:

Unity in Christ

Red Run News -- January 23, 2011

Temperatures were in the single digits on this frigid Sunday morning. Ellen Martin played the prelude music, including the tender song "Jesus, I Come." Indeed this is the attitude of our hearts as we gather together. Bob Sauder led us in hymns of trust in God "God will take care of you." We also sang songs related to the unity of the church.

Ken Sensenig led the Children's Time which then flowed into the message theme of finding unity in the midst of our differing understandings (1 Corinthians 1:10-18). Drawing on his experience with Mennonite Central Committee, Eastern Mennonite Missions, and the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society, Ken explained some of the different perspectives of vision and purpose that emerge. Yet we must always ask, How can we work together as members of the body of Jesus Christ? In humility, we can acknowledge that our understanding is incomplete. We can pursue peace. We can move forward together in the expectation of God's perfect kingdom.

We prayed for Anna Mary Musser who is in the Ephrata Hospital. We also prayed for the nation of Sudan and the vote on whether the north and south will separate into two nations.

We acknowledge the passing of Annie Stauffer, mother of Glenn Stauffer. Glenn, Julie, Melanie, and Erika returned to Pennsylvania from their home in Montana for this funeral.

Red Run News -- January 9, 2011

Ellen Martin played the prelude and offering music. Bob Sauder led us in the opening hymns about God's guidance as we are in a new year. Bob Sauder, Randy Hostetter, Letitia Weaver and Glenda Lafferty led us in praising God -- "He Is Jehovah," "Wonderful, Merciful Savior," and "How Deep the Father's Love."

In the message, pastor Carl used an outline from The Purpose-Driven Life by Rick Warren. We give glory to God as we worship God, as we love each other, as we grow more and more like Jesus, as we exercise the gifts God has given to us and as we tell others the good news of Jesus. We remembered in prayer those who are sick.

On January 2, Pastor Kevin brought a message from the account of the wise men. We also are wise when we give priority to sharing the good news, when we participate in what God is bringing to us, and when we watch for the coming again of the Lord Jesus. In the children's time, Tina told about a missionary family in Chile.

On Sunday, January 16, we will have a combined adult Sunday School class. A fellowship meal will follow the church service.

Peace on Earth

Red Run News -- December 26, 2010

During this holiday season those who have come early on Sunday mornings have enjoyed the music of the chimes choir as they rehearse for the church services.

On December 26, Ellen Martin offered music on the keyboard, including "The Little Drummer Boy." Julia Mickley spoke to the children about the life of missionaries in Cambodia. Julia Sensenig led in singing Christmas hymns, including the Christmas Song "While shpherds were watching their flocks in the night, the hills were aglow with a wonderful sight. " Pastor Carl brought a message on the proclamation of the angels to the shepherds. We give glory to God in the highest and recognize God as both our Creator and our Redeemer. The result is peace here on earth among people.

On December 19, Pastor Melvin brought a message from Matthew 1 "Name Him Emmanuel." The world into which Jesus came was not a friendly world. But Jesus is indeed God come among us to restore us to right relationship with God. Jesus makes a difference in our lives if we are willing.

We prayed for those who are sick, for those who are recovering, for those who are traveling. We gave thanks for those who God has healed. May the Lord be praised in every area of our lives.

Welcome back from Antarctica, Glenn! We prayed for Glenn and Julie Stauffer and their daughters as they return shortly to their home in Montana, where Glenn will be writing about the scientific research he has been doing.

Congratulations to Tina Mickley for completing a master's degree in social work. Andrew Sensenig is returning to Hillsboro, Kansas, but plans to lead a group of students on a study tour to Belize during January.

With expectation, we look to God to bless us in the coming year. Next Sunday on January 2, we plan for a holiday breakfast between Sunday school and the church service.

We celebrate the gift of Christmas

Red Run News -- December 12, 2010

We had a delightful Sunday evening celebrating "The Gift of Christmas." Thanks to Glenda Lafferty and Julia Sensenig for organizing this event and the many who helped in various ways. Of course, Jesus is the most wonderful gift ever. But we offer back to Jesus the sacrifice of praise -- the music that honors Him. The music included songs by the children and by bells and chimes choirs, as well as the songs offered by smaller groups of twos or threes. What a blessing to see people of all ages enter into the spirit of praise and joy. We also enjoyed singing the carols together and seeing the puppets move into place in line with the themes of the songs. Thanks to all who came out to fill the house so well on a rainy Sunday evening.

On Sunday morning, Ellen Martin played the prelude music on the keyboard -- including "Star of the East." Randy Hostetter led the singing. Dawn Martin and Nathaniel Martin read the Scriptures. Pastor Carl brought a message from Matthew 11. Here we have the account of John the Baptist asking whether or not Jesus is the promised Messiah. The answer is "yes" as shown by the miracles and wonders performed by Jesus. Like John, we are on a journey with Jesus. We cannot always see clearly, but we can know that Jesus is with us. Blessed is the one who "does not fall away on account of" Jesus. Blessed are we when we do not fall away because our own limited understanding of Jesus does not exactly match who He really is.

On Thursday, December 16, Ready Runners will meet at the church at 6:00 p.m. to bake cookies.

The best way to wait for Jesus

Today we celebrated the first Sunday of Advent. Ellen Martin played the organ for the prelude and the offering time. Bob Sauder, Letitia Weaver, and Randy Hostetter led us in singing.

Each Sunday of Advent and Christmas, the children's time focuses on a family in mission. Today Glenda Lafferty told the story of Zach and the ministry of happiness he had in Ethiopia.

Pastor Carl had a message on the coming day (Romans 13:11-14). We are waiting on Jesus. We set aside the deeds of darkness. We clothe ourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ. We follow Jesus in heartfelt obedience in our daily lives. This is the best way to wait for Jesus.

We acknowledged the passing of Esther Nolt, mother of Marvin Nolt of the Red Run congregation. We prayed for Glenn during the remaining weeks in Antarctica. We prayed for Kerry and his responsibilities on a field trip on Saturday.

Choose thanksgiving instead of fear

Red Run News -- November 21, 2010

Glenda Lafferty chose songs expressing thanks to God -- "We Gather Together," "This Is My Father's World," and "Count Your Blessings." Pastor Kevin brought the message from Psalm 46, challenging us to choose confidence and thanksgiving instead of fear. Psalm 46 was prepared by the descendants of Korah, a man who perished because of his rebellion against Moses. God sees beyond the negatives in our past as He prepares to bless us now and in the future.

Ready Runners will meet on Thursday, December 2, at 6:30 p.m. at the church. Ready Runners will also meet to bake cookies at the church on Thursday evening , December 16.

A fellowship breakfast is scheduled between Sunday School and the church service (9:30-9:55 a.m.) on December 5. We also plan for holiday breakfasts on December 19 and January 2. Sign up in the lobby to help bring food and drink for these breakfasts.

Red Run News -- November 14, 2010

Thanks to all who helped in the clean up of the grove on Saturday, November 13. The Lord blessed us with a bright and beautiful autumn day. It was good to breathe in the fresh air and stretch our muscles. Several men were running chainsaws as we cleaned up a large oak tree that had been cut down. The aging oak had been in a state of decline and was more than 140 years old.

On Sunday morning, Ellen Martin played the prelude music. Kevin and Letitia Weaver led us in singing. One of the songs "Let Them Praises Give Jehovah" paraphrases the 148th Psalm.

Pastor Carl brought a message on the Twin Blessings: Rules and Work. The God of order brought order into the primeval chaos as he separated the light from the darkness. He blessed the first human couple with the privilege of work -- maintaining the garden of Eden. We are blessed as we submit our lives to the will of our Creator. In the children's time, Pastor Carl talked about the joy of working together.

New chimes put to use

Red Run News -- November 7, 2010

Our new set of chimes was used for the first time this morning. Letitia Weaver led a practice with the chimes before Sunday School. The chimes choir enjoyed learning the Christmas song, "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel."

We enjoyed a fellowship breakfast between Sunday School and the church service.

Bob Sauder led us in song selections. The following were suggested by persons in the congregation: "Come, Christians, Join To Sing," "Amazing Grace," "Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah," and "When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder."

In the children's time, Pastor Melvin told the story of Naaman, Elisha, and Gehazi. At the end of the story, three-year-old Noah raised his hand in response to the question of what he had learned in this story. He summarized it as, "Don't be bad to other people."

Pastor Melvin Weaver brought the message today on "Children of Light" (Ephesians 5:1-21). Let us rise to the challenge of continuing to grow in our love and to weed out the sin in our lives. As we believe in Jesus, we become a light to the world.

On October 31, Pastor Carl brought a message from Luke 19. Jesus came to seek and to save the lost. Zaccheus gladly welcomed Jesus. May we do likewise.

We prayed for Shannon who was sick this morning. Joe Miozza offered thanks for our prayers during his recent hospitalization and recovery. From Antarctica, Glenn Stauffer gives thanks for the emails and photos he has received. Pray for Lewie Martin as he travels back from Indiana.

We acknowledged the passing of Eugene Horning, father-in-law of James Weber. We offer our condolences to the family.

Melvin Weaver is planning to join a Mennonite Disaster Service team traveling to the South during the week after Thanksgiving. Contact Mel if you are interested in going along.

We can use your help at the fall cleaning in the grove on Saturday morning, November 13, beginning at 8:30 a.m.. Bring rakes, leaf blowers, and brooms. A light lunch will be provided.

Kevin and Letitia Weaver led us in singing this morning. They also presented a skit about telling others about Jesus at a bus stop.

Ken Sensenig told the children a story about life on the farm -- a farmer, a hawk, chickens, mice, and corn. Each creature sees the situation through different eyes. We must try to understand the other's point of view when we "fight."

Ken brought a message from Psalm 84 "How lovely is your dwelling place." We release ourselves into God's care like a sparrow that has found a place of rest in God's house. (We sang, "There is a place of quiet rest near to the heart of God.") We join together with our fellow pilgrims as we climb upward towards the city of God. (We sang "Lo, what a pleasing sight are brethren that agree!")

In the Sunday School time, Mose King told us about the Bible ministry of the Gideons. In recent years, exciting opportunities have opened for the Gideons in various nations.

Bob Sauder, Randy Hostetter, Letitia Weaver, and Julie Stauffer led us in singing. Pastor Carl brought a message from 2 Timothy 4:1-5. We are called to proclaim the good news of Jesus, to appeal to hearts, and to rise above obstacles.

We enjoyed a fellowship meal. In the beautiful fall sunshine in the grove, Letitia Weaver and Julia Mickley took photos of many of us for the church directory.

If you want to be part of the chimes choir during the Advent season, check with Letitia Weaver. A possible practice time may be 8:30 a.m. before Sunday School.

Jesus can make us whole

Red Run News -- October 10, 2010

In Sunday School, Charles Harting reminded us that "the statutes of the Lord are trustworthy." Then I stepped out into the warm fall sunshine to see what was happening at the tent set up by Joyce Sauder's class. Unobserved, I heard the children memorizing the verse, "He who promised is faithful." I felt my heart warmed by the two-fold affirmation of God's faithfulness.

Pastor Kevin brought a message from Luke 17:11-19. We are called to have faith that Jesus can make us whole, to extend forgiveness to others, to serve God without expecting to be comfortable, and to remember that life will not continue as usual. We can apply today's lesson to our lives by thanking God for His goodness, by identifying the person we need to forgive, and by offering to serve God in a way that cuts into our comfort.

During the children's service, Kevin replaced the dead battery on a drill to illustrate how we need to be connected to Jesus in order to have power in our lives.

On October 17, a speaker from the Gideons will share in the combined Sunday school class. We are planning for a fellowship meal following the church service. Choice Books will have a display set up in the annex area for October 17 and 24.

Grace, mercy and peace

In the combined adult Sunday School class, teacher Bob Sauder clearly summarized our responsibilities: accept Jesus as Lord and Savior, glorify God in every aspect of life, and show others the way to Jesus.

Julia Sensenig led us in singing hymns appropriate on the occasion of the communion service -- "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross," "Marvelous Grace," and "Hallelujah, What a Savior!" The choir also sang "Break Thou the Bread of Life."

In the message, Pastor Melvin focused on the words "grace, mercy, and peace" in the text he read. By grace we are saved through faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus taught us, "Blessed are the merciful for they will receive mercy." We receive the peace of God that passes all understanding.

Dawn Martin read a story about peacemaking "Guns into Plowshares." Artist Esther Augsburger created a sculpture with this title. The sculpture of a plowshare was constructed from 3000 handguns that had been collected to reduce violence in Washington D.C.

Pastor Carl led us in the communion service.

We remembered in prayer the local Christian agencies who are involved in their fall fund-raising efforts. We prayed for the sick and gave thanks for those who have experienced healing. We prayed for those who are looking for employment.

The Ready Runners will meet at the church on Thursday evening, October 7 at 6:30 p.m.

Red Run News -- September 26, 2010

On September 19, Pastor Kevin challenged us to boast about God. The 113th psalm calls us to praise the Lord -- now and ever more and everywhere the sun shines from the time it comes up until it sets.

On September 26, Pastor Carl used a number of Scripture texts to encourage us to cast all our cares upon Jesus and then to care for one another. He explained how anxiety operates in family and congregational systems. Julia Sensenig told the children a story "The Rainy, Gray Morning" --about the contagious nature of how we treat others.

Glenda Lafferty led us in singing hymns, including that important reminder, "Count Your Blessings."

After the service today, there was an opportunity for those who wanted to share in footwashing. In John 13, we read of how Jesus washed his disciples' feet as a sign of how he loved and served them.

The flowers at the front of the church were from yesterday's funeral for Richard Shupp, brother of Emma Good.

Glenn, Julie and family have arrived in Pennsylvania from Montana. Glenn is headed to Antarctica for another round of scientific research on seals.

We noted the 65th wedding anniversary of Luke and Ruth Horst. Luke served as our bishop from 1969 to 1988.

Next Sunday (October 3), we look forward to sharing together in the communion service.

The annual auction at Woodcrest Retreat Center will be held this Saturday (October 2).

Red Run News -- September 12, 2010

Thank the Lord for the gentle Sunday rain.

In the message this morning, Ken Sensenig spoke about the lost sheep (Luke 15:1-10). Ken also reported on his recent trip to China and North Korea in connection with Mennonite Central Committee.

The music team led us in a beautiful rendition of "The Ninety and Nine." God loves all people, and we are called to do the same. This same lesson was expressed in the puppet show presented by Julia Mickley, Tina Mickley, Alla Prysakar, Colleen Lafferty, and Julia Sensenig. As God's people we need each other and the gifts that each has to share. The children reminded us in song to "Be Kind to Everyone."

Pastor Kevin led us in prayer for those who are in school. The students shared what they like about school. Adults are also in school. Alla Prysakar is taking math and English courses at Reading Area Community College. Tina Mickley is completing a master's degree in social work at Temple University.

Next Sunday (September 19) we will share together in a fellowship meal after the church service.

Praise the Lord for the beautiful season of late summer.We enjoyed a fellowship breakfast between Sunday School and church. Tim Martin challenged us to the fruit of the Holy Spirit in the combined Sunday School class.

Our guest speaker this morning was retired bishop Luke L. Horst.In celebration of Labor Day, Luke asked, "What is the purpose of work -- blessing or curse?" God did a good work by creating all things and then He rested. God placed humans in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. Work is a blessing. Our work is an extension of God's work in this world. The earth suffered when humans rebelled against God. The whole creation will be redeemed as God makes everything new in Jesus Christ!

For next Sunday (September 12), let's plan to have a prayer of commitment for all of us who once again have begun school. We could pass the microphone and each share one thing we like about school or one thing we are looking forward to in the school year.

The worship team is practicing on Thursday evening, September 9, at 6:30 p.m.at the church. The Ready Runners also plan to meet during that same time. And if you're not in either of those groups, you are still welcome to come to the church and chat with Pastor Carl or others.

Sister Anna Weber, Age 99, passes away

When God's people gather to worship, then that worship rises as sweet perfume to God. So says that hymn "In Thy Holy Place" (#434 in the Church & Sunday School Hymnal) which Randy Hostetter led us in singing this morning.

The elective class on spiritual gifts enjoyed an activity involving unwrapping some packages -- and making some spiritual applications.

Pastor Kevin challenged us with a message "Preparing God's people for works of service." God gives each of us a new heart and a spiritual gift.We must open our ears to hear the voice of God and commit ourselves to do God's will. Spiritual work requires prayer and fasting.

The choir sang "Beulah Land" in memory of Anna Weber, who passed from this life on Tuesday, August 24, 2010 at the age of 99 years. Anna was the oldest member at Red Run at the time of her passing. She accepted Jesus as her Savior at the age of nine and held to that faith all the years of her long life. She and her husband John hosted Fresh Air children in their home for many years.

Maxine Harting shared how John and Anna Weber brought her to the Bible School at Red Run when Maxine was a girl. Through that contact with the church community, Maxine came to know Jesus as her Savior.

God leads in surprising ways

Today we gathered in the peaceful woodsy atmosphere of Woodcrest Retreat Center. The drum of rain on the tin roof was a welcome sound because we have seen how dry the ground has become.

Melvin Weaver told the story of Gideon in the Children's Time and the sermon. An angel came to Gideon. As a result, Gideon destroyed the idol in his home town. As God called Gideon, so God may call us in some surprising ways. As we obey God, He leads us on to the next step of our life's journey.

Kevin Weaver led us in singing "Come, Gracious Spirit" and "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross." Kevin and Letitia also sang a powerful song about God's faithfulness.

We enjoyed a delicious fellowship meal and the refreshing rain. Some played cards or put a puzzle together. Some went on the water slide in the rain.The walking stick, an interesting insect, made its rounds with those who were interested.

Bob Sauder taught the opening session of the Sunday School elective about unwrapping our spiritual gifts. God gives us gifts so that we can meet the deepest needs of those around us.

Pastor Carl brought a message on the ministry of Jesus -- preaching the good news, healing the sick, and casting out demons. We trust in God, carry on God's work in this fallen world, and look forward to the day when we will see our Savior face to face.

In the Children's Time, Julia Sensenig told the story of how the dedicated missionary doctor Wilfred Grenfell helped a sick child in a remote area of Labrador.

Bob Sauder, Randy Hostetter, Glenda Lafferty, and Letitia Weaver led us in singing "I'll Fly away," "In Christ Alone," and other songs. Cammyah Floyd played "Brethren, We Have Met to Worship" on the piano.

Joyce Sauder and Sandra Erb have provided some new library books. The new children's books were wrapped in plain paper with an indication of what age they were for. The children signed them out without seeing the cover.

Amy Martin thanked those who supported her in her plans to run September 19 in support of cancer research. Letitia Weaver offered thanks for God's care during their recent family vacation. Pray for those among us who are traveling in the near future.

Pray for Mel Weaver as he makes contacts with the families of some of the children who attended summer Bible School.

All are invited to our 11 a.m. church service at the Cedar Lane Pavilion at the Woodcrest Retreat Center on August 15. A fellowship meal will follow this service at Woodcrest. (There will also be a short 9 a.m. service at the Red Run church building which will include the adult Sunday School lesson.)

Ready Runners will meet on Wednesday, August 18, at 6:30 p.m. The Red Run Choir will resume the 8:30 a.m. practices on Sunday morning, August 29.

Thank the Lord for beautiful summer weather and for the gardens and fields that are producing abundant yields. It is a good thing to give thanks to the Lord!

We enjoyed a fellowship breakfast between Sunday School and the church service.

Glenda Lafferty led us in singing today. Pastor Kevin brought a message from Hosea 11. God's love is never ending. He desires for us to live in His presence. As we give God the highest place in our lives, we begin to see things from His perspective.The children's story was about marshmallows and how we wait for God's best in our lives. God kindly leads us on. The choir sang "On and On We Walk Together."

We prayed for the sick and the bereaved, for those among us who are traveling, for challenges on the job, for those affected by the flooding in Pakistan, and for those impacted by the environmental damage in the Gulf of Mexico. We gave thanks to the Lord for His manifold blessings in our lives.

The church retreat will be at Woodcrest Retreat Center on August 15. The church service will begin at 11 a.m. at Woodcrest, and we have the pavilion rented until 4 p.m. that day. For those who are interested, we also plan to have a short service (including the adult Sunday School lesson) at the Red Run Church at 9 a.m. on August 15.

An adult Sunday School elective class ("Unwrapping our spiritual gifts" ) will be held on August 8, 22, and 29. The combined adult class on September 5 and the messages during this time will support this important subject.

We open our hearts to God's voice

Red Run News -- July 25, 2010

We appreciated our guest speakers in the month of July. On July 4, Peter Sensenig spoke about how we humans look on the outside but that God looks on the heart. (Peter and Christy are back in Pasadena CA where Peter is studying at Fuller Theological Seminary.) On July 11, Andrew Sensenig spoke on the great commandment of loving God and loving others. (Andrew has now moved to Kansas where he will begin a job as a biology professor at Tabor College.) On July 18, retired bishop Irvin Martin spoke on Abraham and Sarah as heroes of faith. Like them, we can also know the voice of God and respond with a trusting and growing faith in God.

Today Ken Sensenig told the children the story of how he rescued some orphaned mallard ducklings. The ducklings responded to his call. Likewise, we can open our hearts to the call of God, and we can call out to God. Ken reviewed the four petitions in the Lord's prayer -- your kingdom come, give us our daily bread, forgive us our sins, and lead us not into temptation.

Kristine Sensenig was visiting from Harrisonburg VA and read the Scripture (Luke 11:1-13) in today's service.

The Ready Runners will meet on Wednesday, July 28, at 6:30 p.m. at the church.

On August 1, we will have a light breakfast between Sunday School and the church service.

An adult Sunday School elective will begin on August 8 on the subject of unwrapping our spiritual gifts.

We prayed for the Habecker congregation and for the Karen immigrants who are finding fellowship there. (Karen Sensenig is the pastor at Habecker.)We prayed for Julia Mickley as she begins a 20-day hike in Utah.

Pray for Brian Guzman who will be licensed this evening as pastor of the Prince of Peace congregation in Reading.

Please bring all empty or filled baby bottles (from the "Baby Bottle Boomerang" offering project during Summer Bible School) to Red Run Mennonite Church and give them to Julia Sensenig. They need to be returned to Susquehanna Valley Pregnancy Services. Thank you.

Red Run News -- June 27, 2010

In the adult Sunday School classes, we learned about living our lives to please God (1 Thessalonians 4).

Bob Sauder led us in singing. Mel Weaver brought a message from Psalm 77. God has helped His people in the past, and God also continues to work in the present. Mel shared some stories that illustrate this important truth. Sometimes God works in hidden ways and we don't see His "footprints" until sometime later. Mel also had a children's story about Elisha and God's wonderful delivery of the starving Israelites in Samaria (2 Kings 7).

Esther Martin led the sharing & prayer time. We prayed for healing for the sick. We also prayed for those who are looking for work.

We look forward to the Fourth of July, which this year falls on Sunday. Kevin Weaver will lead a service at the campground. Peter Sensenig will bring a message at the church. We are planning for our first-Sunday-of-the-month breakfast between Sunday School and the church service (9:30 -- 9:55 a.m.)

Happy Father's Day to all dads.

Kevin Weaver led us in singing.

Pastor Carl brought a message on the prayer in the 43rd psalm: "Send forth your light and truth; let them guide me." God's light breaks upon our pathway to show us the way. God's truth is that which we can absolutely depend upon. We are called to be faithful to those who depend upon us. In the Children's Time, Pastor Carl talked upon the steppingstones through the swamp. So we follow God's truth to find the way safely through this journey of life. The choir echoed that same theme when they sang, "My Anchor Holds."

Crying out to God

Bob Sauder, Randy Hostetter, and Letitia Weaver led us in singing this morning. Some of the songs were based on the psalms -- including the fifth psalm which was the basis of the message by Pastor Kevin "In the morning you hear my voice." The choir also sang a song based on a psalm "Unto the Hills Around."

Pastor Kevin's message:
The psalmist David cried out to the Lord in time of need. We also cry out to God when things do not go the way that we think they should. Sometimes what we see as a bad thing turns out to be a good thing. In the children's time, Kevin told the story of the girl who learned to appreciate Lyle the Crocodile -- after some difficult experiences.

We prayed for those who are sick or injured and for those who are facing other difficulties in life. We remembered those who serve as witnesses in faraway lands.

We welcomed a large group of visitors from the campground on this beautiful Memorial Day weekend.

Ruthie Weaver talked to the children about sunflowers -- growing tall and being fruitful. Pastor Melvin brought a message from Ephesians 2 -- seated with Christ, walking with Christ, and standing with Christ.

Two of our members are requesting our prayers. Anna Mary Musser is recovering at the Ephrata Hospital. Carl Good is scheduled for cataract surgery on Wednesday. Bob Sauder invited input if anyone has any ideas for a Sunday School elective later this summer.

Pray for those who are traveling to school or to seminars or on vacation.

All are welcome to attend the Pastor Appreciation Picnic on Saturday, June 5, at the Terre Hill Park, beginning at 4 p.m.

Summer Bible School (sponsored jointly by the Bowmansville, Red Run, and Gehman congregations) will be held from June 13 through 17 (Sunday through Thursday) at 7 p.m. each evening.

God's Spirit is at work in our world

Red Run News -- May 23, 2010

Pentecost Sunday is a celebration that God gave us the gift of the Holy Spirit to lead us in the way of truth.

The men's class, taught by Tim Martin, was about the apostle Paul, the Christian slave owner Philemon, and the runaway slave Onesimus. Paul strongly urged Philemon to do what is right but still left the final choice to Philemon. Someone in the class quoted a proverb which says, "A man convinced against his will is a man unconvinced still."

Bob Sauder led us in singing. The hymn "Come, We That Love the Lord" contains the phrase "Celestial fruit on earthly ground," which echoes the prayer that Jesus taught us, "Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven."

Pastor Kevin led us in a consideration of Psalm 104:24-34. The Spirit of God called forth the Creation. Even so, we look for the work of God within us. We broke into several groups to hear the Scripture read at various stations on our church grounds as we meditated on how God's Spirit is at work in our world. At each of these stations, Letitia Weaver had also painted a cement slab to illustrate the beauty of the Creation.

Randy Hostetter reported on the birds that have nested in the birdboxes in the grove -- tufted titmouse and chickadee.

One of the small groups has completed the study "God Provides" from Crown Financial. These materials are now in the church library.

Congratulations to Julia Mickley for completing a degree at Earlham College. She majored in human development and social relations and also pottery.

Godly women: Lois and Eunice

Red Run News -- May 9, 2010

The men met early to prepare breakfast for all of us. A delicious breakfast was served in the fellowship hall beginning at 8:30 a.m. Thanks to all who prepared and served the breakfast. One man claimed that the Scriptures expect men to make the coffee (according to the book of He-brews).

Michelle Sensenig played the prelude music. Randy Hostetter led us in singing (including "Praise to the Lord, the Almighty" and "Happy the Home When God Is There.") The children also sang a number of songs.

Pastor Carl told the children about how long ago Anna Reeves Jarvis called a day to pray for all mothers who were impacted by the Civil War and to pray that we would learn to live together in peace. In the message, Carl told about Timothy's "sincere faith" and about his mother Eunice and grandmother Lois, who were both women of faith. Faith has two aspects -- believing the promises of God and remaining true to the promises we make before God.

Walk people home through the darkness

In an evening, the high school students from Ephrata Mennonite School brought a lively presentation to Red Run. A skit emphasized the importance of exercising our gifts in the body of Christ. A men's quintet sang a number of songs.

In the morning service, Ellen Martin played the prelude music including the hymn "My Jesus I Love Thee." Ruthie Weaver later noted that was one of her favorite hymns. Bob Sauder opened with two hymns, one of which included the comforting line "I know thy hand will bring me safely home." Pastor Mel brought a message from the Gospel of John "Love one another." Jesus showed the disciples the full extent of his love by becoming a servant. Mel told the true family story of a little pioneer girl in the Midwest who was fearful of walking home in the dark after working at the neighbors. Love calls us to use a lantern to walk people home through the darkness. Ruthie Weaver shared a story with the children with questions and the answers: What is God like? The music team led us in singing. We prayed for one another and the needs that were especially mentioned.

Special events on Christian Family Sunday (May 9), also known as Mother's Day. The men will serve a breakfast for everybody from 8:30 a.m. to 9:20 a.m. A shortened Sunday School class will begin at 9:20 a.m. (combined adult class in the auditorium) with the regular church at 10 a.m. during which you will find out what is "the best gift to the next generation" (2 Timothy 1:3-7).

Today we enjoyed a gentle springtime drizzle.

Letitia Weaver led us in singing. One of the songs was "Salvation Belongs to Our God." Ken Sensenig gave each of the children a bill and a coin from a foreign country. In his message from Revelation 7, Ken called our attention to what the apostle John saw -- a great multitude from every nation.

God's kingdom is triumphant.

The church is the present-day expression of God's kingdom. (What a challenge to us!)

The fullness of God's kingdom is not here yet.

The choir sang, "Hark, Ten Thousand Harps and Voices."

We remembered in prayer those affected by the tornadoes in the South. We also prayed for the sick, those who have suffered loss, and those among us who are traveling.

Red Run News -- April 11, 2010

On Saturday evening (April 10), about thirty people gathered in the fellowship hall for a time of playing games, food, and fellowship. Thanks to Willis and Anna Mary Burkholder for organizing this.

On Sunday, April 11, we celebrated the communion service. Pastor Kevin preached on the appearance of the risen Christ to the disciples in a closed room as recorded in John 20. Pastor Kevin told the children about that which should be bound (our fears) and that which should be loosed (our kindness). Jesus breathed on his disciples, signifying the new creation. Jesus is sending us with the good news to heal the brokenhearted.

Glenda Lafferty led us in hymns related to what Jesus has done for us: "Jesus Paid It All." "Are You Washed in the Blood?", and "Break Thou the Bread of Life."

We prayed for the needs among us. We gave thanks that the medical issues for Erica Stauffer have been resolved.

April 18 -- The Friendship Community Choir will present during our Sunday morning service -- followed by a fellowship meal.
May 2 -- High school students from Ephrata Mennonite School will present a program at 7 p.m.

A radical future

Red Run News -- April 4, 2010

On Thursday evening, April 1, we gathered for a light meal. Then we entered the auditorium for the Tenebrae service -- a solemn time of singing, hearing the Scriptures, and reflecting on the meaning of the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus. We left the building in quiet contemplation.

Easter morning dawned bright and beautiful. At 9 a.m. we sang the triumphant songs of the resurrection under the trees in the grove. Then we ate breakfast in the fellowship hall.

Julia Sensenig, dressed as Mary Magdalene, told the children what it was like to meet the risen Savior. Pastor Carl used that same story in John 20 to bring a message. Like Mary, the boundaries of our world have been shattered by the resurrection and we look with confidence to the radical future God is preparing -- a new heaven, a new earth, and glorified redeemed bodies for us that will not be subject to death or decay. Do we believe this? Randy Hostetter, Bob Sauder, Tisha Weaver, and Glenda Lafferty led us in singing. We closed the service by enthusiastically singing "Because He Lives."

Randy Hostetter reported that the Penny Power jar weighed about 24 pounds. This money was contributed to Mennonite Central Committee during the Pennsylvania Relief Sale.

Congratulations to Glenn and Julie Stauffer on the birth of Erica Lynn on April 1.

On Saturday, April 10, we are planning a game night in the fellowship hall at 6:30 p.m. (or whenever you can get there). Bring your favorite games. Snacks will be provided.

On Sunday, April 11, we will celebrate the communion service.

Red Run News -- March 28, 2010

Bob Sauder led us in singing "There Is a Fountain," as we acknowledged that our forgiveness comes through the blood of Jesus. The children led us in singing "Garment of Praise." Pastor Carl explained to the children some of the events of the last week that Jesus was here on this earth: the triumphal entry into Jerusalem, the washing of the disciples' feet, the crucifixion, and the resurrection. We will commemorate the suffering and death of Jesus with a Tenebrae service on Thursday evening (April 1). Then we will celebrate the resurrection on Sunday (April 4). Pastor Carl also read Philippians 2:5-11 "Jesus humbled himself." Jesus is the humble servant, the Son of God, the Savior of humankind, and the coming King.

The children collected coins and bills from the adults for Penny Power for the relief ministries of Mennonite Central Committee. This is the last Sunday before the Pennsylvania Relief Sale (April 2 and 3) in Harrisburg. The money jar is quite full and very heavy.

Our representatives gave reports from the Celebration of Church Life, the annual meeting of the congregations of Lancaster Mennonite Conference. Letitia Weaver talked about hope for the future generations. In the Middle Ages, when construction was begun on a great cathedral, the people planted trees in the vicinity so that there would be a source of wood for future generations as they continued the construction of the cathedral. Melvin Weaver brought us a challenge from Eastern Mennonite Missions that the world sees Jesus through us. Esther Martin reported on the five new congregations which have been established recently.

The river of God

Red Run News -- March 21, 2010

We were blessed by a bright, sunny day on the first Sunday of the spring season.Then as we entered the church building, we were doubly blessed with the triumphant music of Easter hymns. (Choir practice is often one step ahead of the calendar.)

In the adult Sunday School class, we studied the first part of the moving story of Ruth. One of the children's classes (taught by Joyce Sauder) wrote their Bible verse in chalk on the sidewalk. They prayed in the church grove to thank God for taking care of them.

Bob Sauder, Randy Hostetter, and Letitia Weaver led us in singing. Some of the songs were about the river of God -- "The River Is Here" and "I've Got a River of Life." Pastor Melvin's message was about God making rivers in the desert. God leads His people and cares for them and brings them home with joy. Melvin also told the children the story of Susanna Longacre, who in colonial times was willing to help all people. We should also be kind and have the reputation of being willing to help others.

Looking ahead to next Sunday (March 28): final offering for Penny Power before the Pennsylvania relief sale, reports from the Celebration of Church Life, opportunity for footwashing at the close of the service.

Red Run News -- March 14, 2010

We were challenged this morning with reports from those who had attended Stewardship University at Lancaster Mennonite School on March 6.

Randy Hostetter reported on efforts by Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA) to promote sustainable development that helps people to provide for themselves. Kevin Weaver talked about how to influence people in ways that are right. Julia Sensenig addressed how we teach values to our children. Paul Gehman described estate planning that has a godly purpose. Edith Gehman said that living simply below your means allows flexibility for the future and generosity towards others. Mel Weaver explained how new technology, especially social networking, has potential for both good and evil. Ruthie Weaver challenged us to choose life by focusing on what matters in life. Carl Sensenig called us to a time of examining our hearts during this Lent season.

We are planning for a fellowship meal after the service on March 21.

A Tenebrae service is scheduled for Thursday evening, April 1, with a light meal in the basement at 6 p.m., followed by the service in the auditorium at 7 p.m. Sign up in the foyer if can attend. You can also sign up if you want to help bring the food.

On Easter Sunday, we plan a time of singing at 9 a.m.(outside -- if weather permits). Then there will be a fellowship breakfast about 9 :30 a.m., followed by a 10 a.m. service which will include a children's time. (There will be no Sunday School classes on Easter Sunday.)

Jesus lives in our hearts

Red Run News -- March 7, 2010

This was a beautiful, spring-like day -- with enough white snow on the landscape to remind us of where we have come from.

In the combined Sunday School class, Pastor Kevin explained to us the proposed directory. God is interested in the entirety of our lives, and we all have gifts to use in God's mission.

Bob Sauder, Randy Hostetter, Glenda Lafferty, and Letitia Weaver led us in singing, including an energized version of "I'll Fly Away."

The excitement was evident when Pastor Kevin led the children in building a tent at the front of the auditorium. In the time of Moses, God dwelt in a tent. In these days, God lives in the hearts of those who believe in Jesus. What a privilege we have to draw close to God, to tell of God's wondrous deeds, and to serve God in our lives.

A card-making session led by Glenda Lafferty will be held on Saturday, March 13 -- with tea at 9:00 a.m. and card-making at 9:30 a.m.

Remember to move the clocks forward one hour next Saturday evening so that you will be on time for church on Sunday, March 14. Also next Sunday, we look forward to some reports by those of us who attended Stewardship University.

All are welcome at the celebration of church life (an annual event of the congregations of the Lancaster Mennonite Conference) to be held March 20 and 21. Saturday events are from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday seminars begin at 1:30 p.m. and again at 2:30 p.m. You can refer to the brochures that were put in the mailboxes.

Take up the cross

Pastor Carl talked about the call to take up the cross, deny ourselves, and follow Jesus in the way of love. Julia Sensenig talked to the children about oceans and shells. She also told about another event that often happens at the edge of the ocean -- baptism of those who believe in Jesus.

Red Run News -- February 21, 2010

We opened our church service by singing that energetic hymn "We're marching to Zion." Esther Martin shared a Lenten prayer that this season the story of God's wondrous love may draw us closer to God.

Pastor Melvin shared the message from the 91st Psalm. God gives us rest. God protects us. God gives us courage. God saves us. We had a number of hymns related to the theme of God's care. Bob Sauder led us in singing "Under His Wing." The choir sang. "He hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock."

Esther Martin shared a childhood memory of Psalm 91. Each morning her first-grade teacher said this by memory. The students all had their heads bowed in meditation. But when Esther peeked, she could see the teacher calmly moving about, adjusting the blinds, etc., as she recited this psalm about God's care. That can be a helpful image for us as we go about our day-to-day activities.

Do not lose heart

Red Run News -- February 14, 2010

Happy Valentine's Day! Before Sunday School, the children enjoyed cookies and hearts made of jello. Thanks to Glenda, Colleen, and Shannon Lafferty for these special treats.

Bob Sauder led us in singing: "When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder, "Near the Cross," "Fairest Lord Jesus," and "All for Jesus." The choir sang "Walk in Love."

Pastor Kevin told stories to the children of how he had lost car keys on two different occasions but he didn't lose heart. In fact, "we do not lose heart" was the theme of the morning -- based on 2 Corinthians 3:12 - 4:2. We do what we can to work at a problem. At the same time, we recognize that some things are beyond our control. We trust God. When we trust God, our confidence is renewed. We become bold, and we share the good news of Jesus with others.

Charles Harting reported that Darla is home from Haiti. He told us about her experiences there. We are thankful for Marty's good recovery from hip surgery and that he could be present this morning. We gave thanks for Amy's new job as a counselor in a school district in Harrisburg. We prayed for the sick -- also for the Swamp Lutheran congregation who had a fire in their church building this week.

Reminder: We are planning for a fellowship meal on February 21 after the Sunday morning service.

Launch out into deep water

Red Run News -- February 7, 2010

What a lovely snowfall! We canceled Sunday School but enjoyed a fellowship breakfast before the church service. Julia Sensenig and Joyce Sauder presented a puppet performance that explained what it means to be fishers of men -- to help others to be caught by God's love. Pastor Carl spoke from that same story (Luke 5:1-11). He shared the phrases of Scripture that spoke to him this week. "Listening to the word of God." "Launch out into deep water." "Let down your nets." "Because you say so." "Do not be afraid." Trust leads to obedience which leads to more trust which leads to greater obedience.

We prayed for Marty in our Sunday service, January 31. Marty had surgery on February 1, and we are rejoicing in the good recovery he is making. Darla Harting is expected to return home today from Haiti where she was working with a medical mission team this past week.

On January 31, Ken Sensenig preached about the call of the prophet Jeremiah. Like Jeremiah, we must personally answer the call from God. "I have decided to follow Jesus." We must also go forward in faith in partnership with God.

The fellowship hall was a scene of activity on Thursday evening, January 28. Sixteen children, along with some adults, gathered to bake cookies. Some of the cookies were shared with Anna Weber who celebrated her 99th birthday on Sunday, January 31, 2010.

The Ready Runners will meet at the church on Thursday evening, February 11, 2010 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Red Run News -- January 24, 2010

This was a cloudy day made beautiful by the warm spirit of friendliness as we gathered for worship.We work together in unity as God's people under the lordship of Jesus Christ. This was the theme that seemed to run through all aspects of our Sunday School and church service this morning. Bob Sauder led us in singing "I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say," and "I Am Thine, O Lord." The choir sang, "How Can I Keep from Singing." Bob Sauder, Randy Hostetter, and Glenda Lafferty led us in a number of songs, including "Light the Fire." Colleen Lafferty helped with the overhead transparencies.

The children sang a number of songs about working together. Then Joyce Sauder and Julia Sensenig presented a puppet scene in which Kermit the frog learned to accept himself as he was made (rather than trying to be a pig or horse). Pastor Carl's message from 1 Corinthians 12:12-31 had two points:
1. Christ is the head of the church.
2. We are the body of Christ.
We accept the authority of the Lord Jesus and the written word of God. We receive God's forgiveness and commit ourselves to live in obedience to God. We believe that God has given gifts to us which we must use to build the body of Christ. We are happy to receive the blessings when other people exercise the gifts God has given to them. Pastor Carl closed the message with Psalm 133 and its poetic imagery of the unity of God's people and how God brings blessing and life.

Anna Weber at Fairmount Homes will celebrate her 99th birthday on January 31.

Kerry Martin is on the committee from the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society that has scheduled a lot of events throughout 2010 to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the European settlement of Lancaster County. Brochures were placed in the church mailboxes.

Ready Runners will meet at the church on Thursday, January 28, for an evening of baking cookies from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. If you can't make it by 6 p.m., come when you are able. In addition to the Ready Runners, others are also welcome to join the fun.

Note the correct dates for some distant events: summer Bible School at Bowmansville is June 13-17. The annual church retreat at Woodcrest will be Sunday, August 15.

A few notes from the ministry team meeting this week:
We plan to add 5 minutes to the Sunday School time with the first buzzer at 9:45 and the second buzzer at 9:50 a.m. and the opening hymns of the church service at 10 a.m. We also affirmed the practice of the past year in which we often include a Children's Time in the church service.

Ken Sensenig licensed for ministry

Red Run News -- January 17, 2009

We prayed today for the people of Haiti who are suffering the after-effects of the massive earthquake. We prayed too for those, such as Mennonite Central Committee, who are providing aid.

Today Kenneth Sensenig was licensed by bishop Ken Martin as a minister of the Gospel for service with Mennonite Central Committee. The request had come from MCC as a means to enhance Ken's ministry as he travels many places on behalf of MCC, the relief and service agency of our church.

David Erb played prelude music on the piano.Glenda Lafferty led us in singing. John Lapp, retired director of Mennonite Central Committee talked about Ken Sensenig's role in bringing together the many church groups in the common purpose to help others in the name of Christ. Richard Weaver, spiritual mentor to Ken, challenged us to "true evangelical faith" that cares for the needy. Karen Sensenig read Philippians 2:5-11. Ken Martin challenged us to take on the attitude of Jesus and follow Him in the steps he took downward in service to humankind. Ken Martin then gave the ministry charge to Ken Sensenig. Ken's father Earl Sensenig led in a prayer of consecration. Ken Sensenig expressed his joy in working with people from many different cultures. Millie Nafziger, who also works with MCC, played the postlude music. We enjoyed a delicious fellowship meal in the church basement while outside it rained and rained.

Remember that our labor in the work of the Lord is not in vain.

On God's Team

Red Run News -- January 10, 2010

Pastor Kevin brought a message "I have called you by name" (Isaiah 43:1-7). God has called us to be on His team, and God will be with us in all the circumstances of our lives. God has been faithful in the past and will be faithful in the future. That is why there is a good future for those who trust in God.

Bob Sauder and Randy Hostetter led us in singing. The songs focused on glory to God and our responsibilities as the children of God.

Continue to pray for Anna, who lives at Fairmount Homes and is approaching her 99th birthday.

We look forward to next Sunday morning (January 17) when Ken Sensenig will be licensed to the ministry for his work with Mennonite Central Committee. A fellowship meal will follow the church service.

Red Run News -- January 3, 2010

On this cold and windy first Sunday of the new year, we shared together in a fellowship breakfast.

Melvin Weaver gave a message on the Wise Men (Matthew 2). When we are wise, we look deeply into what is important in life. Like the wise men, we can step back from our worries and look up to Jesus, who is the light of the world. During the candle-lighting, we were challenged to let our lights shine for Jesus this year.

We opened the congregational singing time with the majestic hymn "Holy God, We Praise Thy Name." The children sang, "God loved us and sent His Son." The choir sang, "O Beautiful Star." Ruthie Weaver introduced us to some new library books. Frank Tomczak read a story to the children about the first Christmas.

Marty Weaver shared with us that he is scheduled for hip replacement surgery on February 1. Let's remember to pray for Marty.

Blessings to Glenn, Julie, and Melanie Stauffer as they return this week to their home in Bozeman, Montana. Glenn recently returned from several months of scientific research on seals in Antarctica. Pray for Julia Mickley as she returns to Earlham College. Also for Peter Mickley as he returns to University of Pittsburgh and picks up a co-op assignment connected to his university studies.

We plan for a fellowship meal after the service on January 17, which is the date that Ken Sensenig will be licensed as a minister for his work with Mennonite Central Committee, the relief and development agency of our church.

Red Run News -- December 27, 2009

On our final Sunday service of the year, we welcomed many visitors. Michelle Sensenig led us in singing. Earl and Liz Martin read the Scriptures for us. The choir sang "Star of the East." Ellen Martin played Christmas music during the prelude and the offering.

James Weber and Luke Witmer were baptized with water upon the confession of their faith in Jesus. Assisted by deacon Randy, Pastor Melvin administered the baptism. Pastor Carl had a message from the Christmas story in Luke 2 with a special emphasis on our response to the coming of the Savior, "There is room in my heart for you, Jesus."

Due to the snow cancellation last week, we had two stories for the children this week.Tina Mickley talked about being born again and told the story of the transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly. Willis Burkholder told of the marvels of God's creation. He also quoted a poem that he had memorized as a child -- "When the frost is on the punkin" by James Whitcomb Riley.

We have a New Year breakfast scheduled for next Sunday, January 3. This will be between the Sunday School class and the church service.

Christmas program delights all ages

Red Run News -- December 13, 2009

The annual Christmas program at Red Run was a delight as people of all ages participated in the music and dialogue. The children sang and presented through puppets the characters in the Christmas story. We enjoyed singing carols and listening to instrumental music, including the songs by the chimes choir. Thanks to all who led out in this.

On Sunday morning, Kevin brought a message on the preaching of John the Baptist. The good news means that we recognize our own sin and give our lives to the Lord Jesus.

We are thankful for the safe return of Glenn Stauffer on Monday, December 15. Glenn had been doing scientific research in Antarctica.

We look forward to the service on December 20. There will be a breakfast between Sunday school and the church service. We are planning for the baptism of Luke Witmer and James Weber. This can serve as a reminder to all of us who have said "Yes" to Jesus.

On Saturday evening (December 19), we are planning to carol in Adamstown. Park in the driveway at either Mel and Ruthie's home or Kevin and Letitia's home at 6:30 p.m.. Then we will carol in the surrounding neighborhood.

Choosing the path of peace

A lovely snowfall on Saturday reminded us of the approaching winter season. This morning we enjoyed a fellowship breakfast between Sunday School and the church service.

In the adult Sunday School class, David Erb reminded us that the genealogies in the Bible invite us into the spiritual experiences of those who have gone before us.

Bob Sauder led us in singing beginning with "Guide My Feet" accompanied by Letitia Weaver on the piano. The choir sang "Love Came Down at Christmas." Dawn Martin told the story of how Bonnie prayed and made some good choices about the person who was stealing gas from her truck. We can choose the path of peace instead of seeking revenge.

Ken Sensenig had a message on preparing for Jesus. At just the right time, God sent Jesus. Rome had established a stable empire with good systems of transportation and communication. The Jews with a messianic hope were meeting in synagogues throughout that world. so the stage was set for Jesus to be born and the Christian church established. As Elizabeth, Zechariah, Mary, and Joseph, we can have hearts that are receptive to Jesus.

Next Sunday, December 13:
A fellowship meal will follow the morning service. The Christmas program will be at 7 p.m. at the church. Plan to come and invite others as we look forward to this time together.

Jesus is coming again!

Red Run News -- November 29, 2009

The first Sunday of Advent 2009 turned out to be a beautiful sunny day. Bob Sauder led our singing and Tim Martin led in the time of announcements and prayer. We lit the first candle of Advent.

Especially for the children Julia Sensenig. with help from Joyce and Bob Sauder, presented a puppet show in which Esmerelda struggled with the temptation of a self-centered Christmas.

The New testament reading was Luke 21:25-36. Pastor Carl preached on the coming again of Jesus. In the mean time, we face uncertainties and perplexities. Beyond that, we see the smiling face of Jesus. Jesus says to us: "Be careful." "Watch and pray." "Lift up your heads; your redemption is drawing near."

With joy, we announce the plans for Luke Witmer and James Weber to seal their commitments to Christ through water baptism on Sunday morning, December 20.

We prayed for Esther Martin, who shared about the treatment of her eyes. Glenn Stauffer will be returning from Antarctica in about two weeks. Julia Sensenig offered a word of thanks to the teachers of the children's Sunday School classes. Peter Mickley was present, on break from his college classes. This was also Lydia Sensenig's first visit to Red Run. (Vic, Michelle, Aaron, and Lydia live in Reedsville in central Pennsylvania.)

Red Run News -- November 15, 2008

Thanks to all who helped to clean up the church grove. It looks beautiful.

We rejoice that Luke Witmer and James Weber have indicated a desire for baptism as an expression of their faith in Jesus Christ.

On November 8, Pastor Kevin asked the children to count a pile of coins he had placed on the carpet at the front of the auditorium. Even our few coins can do much when they are given to the Lord. In his message Kevin shared stories of persons who gave all they had to others and to God. After all, God is the real source of all we need to live.

On November 15, Pastor Carl challenged us to hold fast to our faith in what the Lord Jesus Christ has done for us on the cross. We can do this by stirring each other up to good works, by continuing to meet together, and by looking for that Day (when Jesus returns for His people). The choir sang "There Is a Green Hill Faraway."

Maryann Miozza played the violin. Bob Sauder led us in singing. In the children's time, Julia Sensenig and the children had a conversation with Buddy (a cardboard dog) about obedience school. .

Keeping our eyes open

In our adult Sunday School classes, we discussed questions related to the passage 1 Peter 4:7-11. We reported some of these ideas during the sharing time. Following is a sampling of some other items in our discussion:

We want to become more like Jesus

We want to pray together with one another

Prayer can be an outreach

We want to share our needs openly but also know how to respect confidentiality

Let's keep our eyes open to those God is bringing into our lives.

Pastor Melvin challenged us to use the gifts that God has given us. He talked about the gifts of music, organization, food, hospitality, mechanical skills, making peace. Mel also told the story to the children of how the Apostle Paul boldly told others about Jesus even when that meant persecution for him.

We gave thanks that Luke Witmer professes Jesus as Savior and has expressed a desire for baptism. We blessed Kerry Martin as he has received an assignment to produce a commemorative booklet celebrating the 300th anniversary (in 2010) of the first Mennonite settlement in Lancaster County. We prayed for Glenn Stauffer in Antarctica. We also remembered other loved ones as well as those among us who are sick.

Upcoming events: All are welcome to a district institute at Bowmansville Mennonite Church at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3, when three local bishops will give input on faithful witness. And on Saturday, November 14, we can use your assistance at the fall clean-up day at the church beginning about 8:30 a.m. A light lunch will be served.

Pastor Kevin told the story of Martin the Cobbler to the children. In the message, he challenged us to look out the window. God is bringing people into our lives. Are we willing to lay aside the distractions that keep us from sharing the good news of Jesus? Are we ready to partner together in prayer? Next Sunday (November 1), let's share together in Sunday School, what God has been saying to us in the past weeks and months from this text 1 Peter 4:7-11.

Also next Sunday we look forward to a fellowship breakfast between the Sunday school class and the church service, as well as turning the clocks back one hour.

Red Run News -- October 18, 2009

What a rainy (and in some places, snowy) weekend!

Randy Hostetter, Bob Sauder, and Glenda Lafferty led the singing this morning. The choir sang "Sing of the Mighty One."

Ken Sensenig gave an ear of corn to each of the children. This represents the work that Mennonite Central Committee is doing to help persons farm the land when they return to their homes after a time of war. In his message Ken talked about his recent trip to Africa. In spite of human imperfections, the church is a place of hope during times of great difficulty.

All are welcome to a session "Faithful Witness in a Changing World" at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3, at the Bowmansville Mennonite Church. Part of the 2009 district leadership institute, this session is open to everyone. We recognize the changes in our culture, and we also desire to be faithful to the teachings of the Scripture.

The Ready Runners will meet at the church from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday evening, October 28, 2009.

Plan on helping out at the fall clean-up at church scheduled for Saturday, November 14. Work will begin about 8:30 a.m., and a light lunch will be served.

Dedication of Elise and Ethan

A baby dedication service is a time of celebration and hope. Today Melvin Weaver led in the dedication of Elise Brianne, daughter of Randy and JoAnne Hostetter, and Ethan Quinn, son of Kevin and Letitia Weaver. Glenda Lafferty led us in songs about the Christian home. "Happy the home where God's strong love is starting to appear, where all the children hear His frame and parents hold Him dear."

The theme of Pastor Kevin's message was "Stay wide awake in prayer" (1 Peter 4:7-11). He told the children the story of the boy who fell asleep in church and then fell out the window. The boy was revived by the Apostle Paul, the preacher at the church service. The message called us to be faithful in prayer and to keep our eyes open to the needs around us. The challenge before us: "Look, the harvest is ready." Letitia Weaver prepared a painting to remind us to look out the window to the harvest that is there.

We enjoyed a fellowship meal after the church service.

Put the Red Run Christmas program on your calendar. This is Sunday, December 13, at 7 p.m. at the church. See Julia Sensenig if you would like to help play chimes at the program. There will be three practice sessions for those who are playing chimes.

Congratulations to Michelle and Victor Sensenig on the birth of Lydia Lois on Sunday morning, October 11. (As Victor's parents, we remember that he also was born on a Sunday morning.)

Red Run News -- October 4, 2009

In our combined adult Sunday School class, Eugene Kreiser reported on the work of the Gideons. He gave stories of how the Gideon Bibles have impacted lives.

Randy Hostetter led us in singing. The choir sang "Jesus Paid It All."

Pastor Carl brought a message from 1 Peter 4:7-11, which is the passage we have been considering for some time as we think of a vision statement for our congregation. The focus of the message was on hospitality (v. 9). Hospitality is literally "love for the stranger." It includes food and shelter but also respect for the dignity and personhood of others. Jesus is the perfect host. Today we celebrated the communion service in anticipation of the heavenly banquet in God's eternal kingdom.

As we continue to meditate on 1 Peter 4:7-11, think of the following questions:

What is God saying to me in this passage?
What are my areas of interest or skill?
What relationships is God directing me to invest in?
What help or service could I offer?
In what area would I appreciate help?

The passing of Sister Sarah Horning

Red Run News -- September 27, 2009

Sarah Horning passed away this past Friday at Fairmount Homes. The funeral service will be held on Friday, October 2, 2009, at 10 a.m. at the Bowmansville Mennonite Church. A viewing will be from 9 to 10 a.m. at the same place. Sarah has attended Red Run since she was carried here by her parents many years ago. Her quiet dignity has been a blessing to us.

Pastor Melvin brought a message on loving one another. We are called to love God and to love each other. At the end of the service, opportunity was given to wash each other's feet as a sign of this love.

Vitaliy has been hired as a night custodian at a school. Tina is beginning an internship at a skilled care facility.

Glenn Stauffer left yesterday to travel via Australia and New Zealand to Antarctica where he will conduct scientific research on seals for the next ten weeks.

Red Run News -- September 20, 2009

It was a beautiful last Sunday of summer 2009. We concluded the Sunday School elective "Love and Respect." So next Sunday the regular adult classes will resume with the men's class in the auditorium and the women's class in the annex.

Today was a joyous occasion in the life of our congregation. Pastor Kevin Weaver was ordained to the ministry in a service directed by Bishop Kenneth Martin. Pastor Carl challenged each of us to minister to others with the gifts that God has given to us so that in all things the Lord Jesus may be glorified.

We gave thanks that Miguel is well after several days in the hospital this past week. We prayed for those who are sick. We also prayed for those who are looking for jobs.

Ken Sensenig has returned after spending several weeks in Africa

We look forward to the communion service on Sunday, October 4. We will not have a fellowship breakfast on that morning.

The Ready Runners met for singing and a tea party on Wednesday evening. On Friday evening, the Red Run Choir sang at Fairmount Homes.

Church retreat at Woodcrest

Red Run News -- September 13, 2009

Interesting weather for all the campers -- rainy on Friday and Saturday and gorgeous sunshine on Sunday.

On Saturday evening at Woodcrest, we had a time of prayer, singing, general knowledge questions, and then sharing. Several persons spoke of illnesses or other reverses and how God led during those times. Word games seemed to predominate in the activities that followed.

At 9 a.m. on Sunday about a dozen of us gathered at the church for a short time of Bible study, singing, and prayer. Charles Harting taught the lesson on Gideon. We were challenged to worship God in all circumstances of life rather than just those times when we face difficulties.

The 11 a.m. church service was held at Circle Pavilion at the Woodcrest Retreat Center. We welcomed folks from the South 7th Street (Reading) congregation, some of whom had also camped at Woodcrest for the weekend. Steve and Carol Good and Keith Fretz led us in some robust singing, including the hymn "Blessed Be the Name."

Julia Sensenig had a lesson on sharing with the children. She told the story of the widow who was willing to share her last flour and oil to make bread for Elijah. Consequently, God blessed her with a continuing supply of those ingredients.

Kevin Weaver gave us a message from Psalm 19. We reflected on the immensity and wonders of the Creation and the glory and majesty of the Creator. We also rejoiced in the Word of God which gives us direction in life as we walk in obedience to Jesus our Savior.

We all enjoyed a noon fellowship meal, including the barbecue chicken which we could smell cooking all morning under the watchful eye of Willis Burkholder. Afterward some of the children and some of the adults enjoyed Woodcrest's famous water slide -- fun to slide on and also fun to watch.

Next Sunday (September 20)
Services will be back to the usual time and place. But this will be a special service of ordination for Pastor Kevin Weaver. Bishop Ken Martin will officiate. And a fellowship meal will follow. (Everyone bring a main dish; last names beginning A-Ma bring dessert, ME-Z bring salad).

Look in the mirror

Red Run News -- August 30, 2009

Pastor Kevin brought a message from James 1:17-27. He displayed two large mirrors at the front of the church to illustrate this message. God's Word is a mirror in which we can see the truth about our lives, and then we can make those changes that God desires for us.

Pastor Kevin also read 1 Peter 4:7-11 in several translations. We had an opportunity to share what we heard in this passage. We plan to use this passage to think about a possible vision statement for our congregation. This text will be used for four consecutive sermons in our congregation: September 20 (ordination), September 27 (opportunity for footwashing after the service), October 4 (communion), and October 11 (baby dedication).

Congratulations to Andrew Sensenig, who has completed a Ph.D. degree in entomology from the University of Maryland. He is presently doing research at the University of Akron and resides at 710 Kling Street, Akron, OH 44311. By the way, after the service today, some of the children discovered a mysterious insect right outside the entrance. It has something on its back that makes it look a bit like Triceratops. We sent a picture of this insect to Andrew to see if he can identify it.

We prayed for those who are sick. We prayed for all those who are looking for jobs or internships. We remembered Ken Sensenig, who is traveling in Africa.

Keep in mind the following events in September.

September 6 -- a fellowship breakfast (9:30 to 9:55 a.m.) between Sunday School and the church service.

September 11-13 is the annual church retreat at Woodcrest. Special events include the Saturday evening campfire and then the Sunday noon fellowship meal chicken barbecue. The church service at Woodcrest on Sunday morning begins at 11 a.m. (We are also planning for a time of Bible study, prayer, and singing at the Red Run church from 9:00 to 9:45 a.m.; Charles Harting will be teaching.)

September 20 -- Ordination of Pastor Kevin Weaver during our regular Sunday morning service at Red Run. This will be followed by a fellowship meal.

Following Jesus

Ellen Martin played songs on the keyboard as a prelude to our worship service.

Pastor Carl led a prayer for all the students and teachers who will be entering the classroom soon for the 2009-10 school year.

Bob Sauder, Randy Hostetter, and Glenda Lafferty, accompanied by their guitars, led us in singing -- "Put on the Garment of Praise" and "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross." The choir sang "Wonderful Words of Life."

During the children's time, Ruthie Weaver talked about bread. We ask God for our daily bread. Jesus is the Bread of Life. Each of the children sampled a piece of freshly baked bread. Melvin Weaver followed with a sermon from John 6:48ff. What does Jesus mean when he speaks of eating his flesh and drinking his blood? This means to obediently follow Jesus in our daily lives in the ways of trust and peace.

Julia Mickley reported on a good summer at Woodcrest. She is entering her senior year at Earlham.

We welcomed Ethan Quinn Weaver, age 9 days, to his first church service. We were glad to have many visitors today, including a large contingent from the neighboring campground.

Maryann Miozza played hymns on the mandolin: "Trust and Obey" and "Our God Reigns." Randy Hostetter led us in singing songs related to following God's wisdom and becoming more like Jesus.
Teach me Thy way, O Lord, teach me Thy way!

Help me to walk aright, more by faith, less by sight.
Lead me with heavenly light, Teach me Thy way!

Pastor Carl brought a message about King Solomon's request for wisdom from God. Yet even Solomon in his older years did not follow the Lord with his whole heart. As we mature, we should also grow in grace and not become scornful of others. By God's grace, the spirit of scoffing is cast out of our lives, and the fruit of the Spirit is implanted. We receive the wisdom from above that is pure, peaceable, and gentle.

Ethan arrives

Red Run News -- August 9, 2009

On Wednesday, August 5, the Ready Runners met at the church. The evening's activities included music and games led by Peter and Christy, who recently returned from Africa.

Ethan Weaver, son of Kevin and Letitia was born on Friday, August 7. Congratulations!

During the Sunday School time this morning, Victor and Michelle showed pictures from Indonesia. The children learned to sing an Indonesian song and then drew pictures of the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra.

Bob and Joyce Sauder introduced the fresh air child who is staying with them. Bob led us in singing today. The choir sang "Jesus Paid It All."

Ken Sensenig talked to the children on the theme "Thank God for the rain." The setting for today's Bible lesson was a time of drought. Ken brought a message on Elijah's discouragement after his triumph over the prophets of Baal. God is always present. God will sustain us. Other people will share our burdens if we permit them to do so.

Ken Sensenig will be traveling in Africa for a month.

Equipping the saints

We enjoyed a fellowship breakfast between Sunday School and the church service.

In the church service, Pastor Kevin called the children forward and explained to them the equipment he uses on his truck driving job: hardhat, fluorescent vest, keys, gloves, credit card. Then Kevin brought a message on "equipping the saints" (Ephesians 4:1-16). We are called to unity and to work at interpersonal relationships using scriptural principles.

The choir sang the hymn beginning, "Dear Lord, take up the tangled strands where we have wrought in vain . . . " During the sharing time, Ruthie Weaver said that the song spoke to her because it had been a favorite of her mother.

It's time to sign up for the annual church retreat at Woodcrest Retreat September 11-13. The sign up papers are in the church lobby. There are separate sign up sheets to indicate each of the following: you plan to camp, you plan to attend the chicken barbecue/fellowship meal at Sunday noon, you want to volunteer to bring food to that meal. We are planning for a Saturday evening campfire. Some friends from the South 7th Street congregation will join us for camping, the Sunday morning service, and the fellowship meal.

Bread from heaven

The participants in the "Love and Respect" Sunday School elective are enjoying some lively discussions. The emphasis this morning was on openness and understanding in communication.

Peter and Christy returned from an assignment in Africa. They reported on their work today. They showed us clothing and other customs and then helped us enter into the lives of various persons they had met. Many of us joined their invitation for tea in the basement after the service.

The emphasis in Scripture (John 6:1-14) and song this morning was on Jesus as the bread of life. There are people in our lives who have a spiritual hunger. God takes our small acts of obedience and transforms them to miracles of blessing.

"When Jesus calls us home to heaven
At his table we'll sit down.
Christ will gird himself and serve us
With manna all around."

Red Run News -- July 19, 2009

Bob Sauder and Randy Hostetter led us in singing songs, including the hymn "On Christ the Solid Rock." Melvin Weaver brought a message about Jesus as the cornerstone (Ephesians 2:11-22). In Old Testament times, God was faithful to His people generation after generation. Now in Christ, God has called together one people, both Jew and Gentile. The choir closed the service with a hymn of triumph, "Awake, arise, O church of Christ, the crowning day is near!"

We prayed for Kevin Weaver as he is serving as a volunteer counselor at Woodcrest. We prayed for the sick and rejoiced with those whom God has healed. We prayed for those who are looking for a change in work.

Peter and Christy Sensenig are scheduled to return this week from a six-month assignment in East Africa. They plan to report at Red Run on Sunday, July 26.

On Thursday, July 9, 2009, the Ready Runners sang at several locations inside Fairmount Homes. They then traveled to the Akron Park where they enjoyed a picnic and games.

On Sunday, July 12, Glenda Lafferty led us in our singing. In the children's time, Ken Sensenig talked about how many pennies it takes to equal the $130,000 raised for Penny Power this past year. Ken gave us a message from Psalm 85. What a journey for the Israelites on the way to the Promised Land! Like them, we must heed the promises and warnings of God. The choir closed the service by singing, "Beulah Land."

Kevin shared a testimony of gratitude for the work he had this week. We prayed for Sarah who is back at Fairmount Homes after several hospital experiences this past week.

Red Run News -- June 21, 2009 -- Father's Day

We prayed this morning for the fathers in our congregation.

A Sunday school elective "Love and Respect" was begun today. This class meets in the annex area. This morning the class was taught by Kevin Weaver. Others will teach the class in following weeks. The standard Sunday School lesson will be taught in a class in the auditorium.

Our guest speaker was Ryan Long, a student at Elizabethtown College. Ryan's message was entitled "Afraid To Love." Ryan challenged us to express the love of Jesus to others in our individual lives and as a church. For the children, Julia Sensenig told the story of Paul, Philemon, and Onesimus -- examples of friendship among people of different stations in life.

Julia Mickley gave thanks for a good first week of camp at Woodcrest and asked us to remember the staff training this coming week. Marty Weaver was back after spending several weeks in Ohio. We prayed for the sick and bereaved and also gave thanks for God's healing.

Lewie and Esther Martin, assisted by others in our congregation, provided a Saturday morning Farmer's Breakfast for the senior citizens in the churches of the Bowmansville-Reading District. Kevin Weaver gave a nature talk about lichens -- which are really a working together of two different species, an algae and a fungus.

A spiritual birth

Thanks to all those who helped with the Summer Bible School this past week at the Bowmansville Mennonite Church. Red Run members were well represented among those who staffed and attended the Bible School, and this is greatly appreciated.

Thanks to those who organized the Ministry Appreciation Picnic at the Terre Hill Park on Saturday, June 6. We had good food and fellowship and a lot of fun on the playground.

Welcome back to some of our college students who have been away from us for a while.

Congratulations to Nathaniel Martin, whose Little League team won the championship game. We are glad to see Nathaniel recovering from an injury to his face that he received in that game.

We appreciate that former pastor James Martin was with us on June 7 to bring the message. James used the account of Nicodemus (a respected teacher) coming to Jesus (the Master Teacher) in John 3. James described the spiritual birth that God works in our hearts.

On June 14, Randy Hostetter led us in singing songs about following Jesus. Pastor Carl told the children the story of the shepherd boy David being anointed as the king of Israel. Pastor Carl also had the message on the parable of the growing seed (Mark 4:26-29). We are called to be faithful in the planting of the seed of the gospel (the good news of Jesus), but God makes the seed grow (by bringing conviction and new life).

The infilling of the Holy Spirit

Red Run News -- May 31, 2009

On Pentecost Sunday we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit to the Christian church. To the children, Pastor Kevin showed a model airplane and talked about the need for power and direction for the plane to fly. Likewise, we need God's Spirit within us for power and direction in our lives.

Pastor Kevin brought a message from Acts 2. He called us to see the fields that are ready to be harvested (that is, those persons in our lives who need to hear the good news of Jesus) and to ask God for an infilling of the Holy Spirit so that we have the desire and the power to share this good news. Pastor Kevin challenged us to connect with each other and with other believers so that we can encourage one another in our calling to extend the fellowship to those whom God is calling.

The children sang "Who's that walking on the water?" This is a song related to the upcoming Bible School at Bowmansville Mennonite Church June 7-11 (Sunday-Thursday) at 7 p.m. each evening. There are classes for all ages including an adult class taught by Jeremy Leaman. Many from our congregation are helping to operate this Summer Bible School.

We welcomed Daniel from Mozambique who is staying at the home of Ken and Karen Sensenig and working with Mennonite Central Committee.

A Sunday School elective "Love and Respect" is scheduled to begin on Sunday morning, June 21. This will be held in the annex area of the church while the standard Sunday lesson will be studied in the class in the auditorium.

All are welcome to the picnic in the Terre Hill Park on Saturday, June 6, beginning at 4 p.m., with the meal served about 5 p.m. This picnic is an expression of appreciation for the ministry team at Red Run.

Next Sunday (June 7) we plan for a fellowship breakfast time from 9:30 to 9:55 a.m., between Sunday School and the church service. Former interim pastor James Martin is scheduled to bring the message.

Big trees on the Muddy Creek

Red Run News -- May 24, 2009

The Ready Runners gathered at the church on Wednesday, May 20, and made cards for some of the residents at Fairmount Homes. Then on Friday evening, the Red Run Choir went to Fairmount Homes and presented an evening of hymns -- and delivered the cards.

It's a big holiday weekend, and we welcomed the visitors from the campground. Randy Hostetter and Bob Sauder on the guitars and Letitia Weaver on the piano led us in singing "Ancient of Days," "Great Is the Lord," and "O Lord, You're Beautiful."

Maxine Harting shared a testimony of how the Lord spoke to her through music this week and assured her of His love.

Ken Sensenig brought the message from Psalm 1 "They are like trees planted by streams of water." We were encouraged to love God and to love others. Ken also talked about sycamore trees with the children and how these trees grow large along the Muddy Creek next to our church.. He also demonstrated what wheat and chaff are and how the two can be separated by the wind.

Sensenigs report at Red Run

Red Run News -- May 17, 2009

"With ready feet I love to appear
Among the saints and seek Thy face,
Oft have I seen Thy glory there,
And felt the power of sovereign grace."

Thus sang the Red Run Choir during our time of worship today -- echoing our joy of assembling with the people of God and encountering the grace of God..

A Saturday night spring thunderstorm gave way to a calm and cool Sunday morning. Some of the children were fascinated by a toad hopping about in a tree stump in the church grove.

Victor and Michelle Sensenig returned to the States on Tuesday (May 12) after a four-year assignment with Mennonite Central Committee in Indonesia. Their son Aaron was born in Indonesia two years ago. Vic and Michelle told us about their interactions with friends and students during their time in Indonesia.

We had a prayer of thanksgiving for those who are recovering from accident and sickness. After the service, many of us enjoyed a fellowship meal together.

Ready Runners will met on Wednesday, May 20, at 6:30 p.m. The Red Run Choit will sing at Fairmount Homes at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 22.

Breakfast by the men

Red Run News -- May 10, 2009

What a beautiful day! As we arrived at church, the birds were singing noisily in the big oak trees. Inside, Letitia Weaver was at the piano, adding to the music of praise. In the basement, a crew of men under the direction of Willis Burkholder, prepared a Mother's Day breakfast for all of us.

On this day, we give thanks for our mothers. We also acknowledge the influence of godly women in our lives and express our appreciation for Christian families. Several persons talked about their mothers."Is there a Children's Day?" asked a child of the adult next to him during this morning's service.

Melvin Weaver brought a message on the river of life (Ezekiel 47). In the course of the message, Pastor Mel called us to be certain of our foundations in Christ and to love God and to love others.

Bob Sauder is asking if anyone has any input about doing a summer Sunday School elective with the book Love and Respect. Vitaliy and Alla expressed thanks for our prayers during their recent trip to Ukraine. Esther Martin reported on a powerful Day of Prayer at Long's Park on May 7.

We prayed for Vic, Michelle, and Aaron Sensenig who are traveling from Asia this week. They are scheduled to be at Red Run next Sunday (May 17). Remember that there is a fellowship meal after the service on May 17.

We live in a green world that was blessed with further rain today. In Sunday School class we rejoiced in the God who has chosen us and adopted us into God's family. "I'm so glad I'm a part of the family of God," Letitia played on the piano as we gathered for the church service.

Glenda Lafferty led us in singing. The children also sang the verse, "If you confess with your mouth and believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead, you will be saved."

Pastor Carl gave a message from Colossians 4:2-6 challenging us to pray for an open door of opportunity in our lives to share the good news of Jesus. Pray expectantly, act wisely, and speak graciously.

We acknowledged the passing of Jennie Martin, age 85, younger sister of Anna Weber and Sarah Horning.

Vitaliy, Alla, Miguel, and Simao Prysakar are returning today from their three-week trip to Ukraine. Vic, Michelle, and Aaron Sensenig leave Indonesia today and plan to spend a week with friends in Australia before returning to the States on May 12. Vic and Michelle plan to speak at Red Run on Sunday, May 17.

Congratulations to Kerry Martin on his graduation from Millersville University yesterday with a master's degree in U.S. History.

Next Sunday (May 10) we celebrate Christian Family Sunday. Take note of the following schedule:
Some of the men of the congregation will prepare breakfast, which will be served in the fellowship hall from 8:30 a.m. to 9:20 a.m. All are welcome.
Beginning about 9:25 a.m., Sunday School classes will be held for the children and a combined adult Sunday School class will be held in the auditorium.
Our regular church service will begin at 10 a.m.
